If you wanted "western culture" so much, why did you leave??? Ah...the money, right? Surely not for the experience!!! |

Personally, I won't eat Korean food in Seoul.
If you have never lived outside of "Greater Seoul" (including Incheon) you have never lived in Korea.
There is a lot of goodstuff outside of Seoul, and in my experience I have had way more fun in Korea outside Seoul then in it.
Seoul is the biggest boring city in the world. |

Ask a Korean which Korean city is the best one.
Where are the best universities?
Where are the best schools?
Where are the best hospitals?
Where are the best ...?

Where do most Koreans go (or want) to work?
Which Korean city? |

Perfectly logical.
But 12 million Koreans seem to get along just fine.
I guess it just takes a foreigner to point out the finer points of Korean cuisine.

I see. No unjustifiable prejudice here either.

I wonder if the Koreans who live in big western cities get the same
"culture purist" attitude from other Koreans who don't. |

The 'real' America isn't LA or San Francisco or New York-
it's Warren, Arkansas.
Any American who says differently is simply a big city snob who doesn't know the true America.
And for Canada, it's La Ronge, SK. |

That was pre-Internet, pre-McDonalds, pre-Carrefour, pre-a single living Korean soul who had ever heard the word "baguette". Home telephone service and Western-style toilets were catching on outside of Seoul in a very big way, I recall. Perhaps Diver might know what I'm talking about.... Back when Daejeon circa 2005 would have seemed like Hong Kong to the most cosmopolitan Seoulites of that era. |
I do know what you're talking about. I was in Gunsan (then Kunsan...Iksan was still called Iri) in '95. Daejeon? Forget about it...JEONJU was the big city metropolis for us Gunsanites (all three of us or so). Jeonju had a KOREX!
I remember a funny conversation from those days. I was with two other teachers. One has just come back from their first trip to Seoul and was raving about how great Seoul was, and how much Gunsan sucked (well...it did...kinda...). Anyway, this teacher was enthused about the fact that Seoul had a...wait for it...Pizza Hut! Woo hoo!
The other teacher pointed out that Gunsan wasn't so bad...and that Jeonju had a Pizza Hut and it was only 40 minutes away by bus. The first teacher moaned 'I don't wanna travel for 40 minutes to go to another city just to go to Pizza Hut', to which the second teacher replied 'In Seoul, it takes you forty minutes to travel the 6 blocks to Pizza Hut by bus. What's the difference'.
Er...okay...it's not actually that funny...just wanted to sare it with you. |

I remember visiting Taejon in '99 and thinking "wow, this is like Pusan circa 1996."
That's as far as western-style amenities goes...nothing more. It was just as enjoyably Korean as the next place. |

I remember when Ulsan had...count them...1 McDonald's! The one downtown near KFC, which were the ONLY two places to get western meals...well, on a teacher's budget anyway!
The big deal was to take the bus into Pusan (yep, then it was
Pusan) and going to Subway. What a treat!
I also remember when Carrefour opened out past the airport. They got in a supply of nacho chips which were sold out in about 1 day ("hey, did you hear? Carrefour has nacho chips!"....)
Ah, the ?good? old days?? |

Let's see...Not to smart of me to even answer this post, but i'm bored, so here is my 3cents.
Not everyone lives to get drunk.
Living utside of Seoul can mean 1/2 hr to get there, and lets see... a 15,000 taxi ride will not kill anyone.
Seoul is not the only place to get good beer.
The east coast is 3 or 4 hrs our of Seoul. You got the sea in Seoul?
I can take a bus ride to Seoul and get anything I want. Who cares? Not everyone wants to live in that crowded smoggy place.
Do you think everyone thinks like you do? peple like to live in other places, and do other things. Some of us come here to get away from western food, korean food is great.
Cohiba, don't turn people off about where to live. Are you part of the Seoul tourism board? Why are you in Korea, by the way? |
