I'm new at this, having just got my nice new computer set up the other day. I downloaded azureus and currently, it seems as if i have a movie downloading, the phantom of the opera. it says it will take 1 1 /2 hours....is that good? how fast does a film usually take to download?
also, once it's finished, how do i watch it?
thanks,
sarah
by the way, i did do a search on here, but after an hour of searching, i couldn't find an answer to my questions. |

It's not good, it's Andrew Lloyd Webber...
Anyway - you need to find where it says how many kb/s are being transferred. If you have an idea of how fast your cable line is, that'll tell you whether the torrent is making full use of it or not.
As for watching it, that depends entirely on how the film is encoded... does it say in the filename? DivX or XVid or anything like that? |

Anyone have any good torrent sites for movies... all of the ones I've used in the past are dead.

www.piratebay.org seems to be the most consistent, it's swedish and they thumb their noses at whatever fruitcake organization is slapping lawsuits on whomever.
any else? i could use a few new ones. bi-torrent seems to be pretty useless lately. |

try this site for all sorts of links to sites:

IMHO bit torrent is going to go to IRC much harder for the MPAA to shut down those bots. It can be difficult at first to do but once you catch on its pretty easy to do. Just need to know the channels and servers, some have the info on their web sites |

Uberscheisse mentioned thepiratebay, which is one of my favorites. For lossless music, you can check out http://btmusic.org:2710/, but it is a membership site and you do have to maintain at least a 1:1 upload:download ratio.
Unfortunately, lokitorrent.com was recently taken down, but another one is on its way: http://www.unrealtorrents.com. The tracker should be up and running soon; it's from the same people who ran lokitorrent (except Lowkee..he's in a bit of legal trouble). |

Lowkee got something like $30,000 in donations for his fight against the MPAA, he's probably on a beach in Brasil by now. |

Don't know about films. With my internet service I can get download speeds of 200 kB/s to 300 kB/s. One CD holds about 700 MB of data. Here's some math:
700 MB * 1024 kB/MB * 1/250 s/kB * 1/60 min/s = 47 mins.
So about 3/4 of an hour to download one CD worth of data. I think that's pretty fast. Note, however, that this is the speed that I get with my internet connection. You have to tell us what your speed is. But the program that you're using should be able to tell you when your download is going to finish. Should have ETA (estimated time of arrival) stated somewhere.

You'd use a program that would play video files. You can try www.videolan.org for a program that you won't have to download all kinds of other junk for. |

I just started using BT (a little late in the game, I know) and I've never gotten anywhere near these rates.
Right now I'm downloading episodes 1-16 of Lost, and it's been pretty consistent at 55 kb/s up and 30 kb/s down. According to my BT client, I've sent 508 Mb up and received only 146 Mb. At this rate it'll take 5 days for the transfer to finish. I'm all for charity, but what gives? Are there any tricks to make things move faster in my direction? |
