Last time I bought one of the Korean English papers, there was a similar story about the incidence of crimes commited by foreigners. I did my own little research and found foreigners are still 3 times less likely to commit crimes than Koreans while in Korea. Emailed the reporter about this little fact, and he replied "well, that's the numbers I got from the government." The idiot was completely unappologetic for fueling xenophobia. |

Crimes by Foreigners Jump 48% in 2004
Number of Illegal Migrant Workers Increases to 188,000
The increase was attributed to a growing number of illegal foreign workers who commit crimes to supplement their living costs while trying to avoid deportation.
"It is hard for police to efficiently investigate crimes by foreigners with the current staff as the number of foreigners and their crimes are increasing," a police officer said. "Especially, if an illegal resident commits a crime and hides, it is difficult to find out his or her whereabouts."
