I can't imagine there is a definitive text on history (of any country), why don't you minimize/focus your interest(s) on a particular aspect of SK history. Then, figure out which type of graduate school program (western univ.) would use books for instruction, and look up the syllabi for such programs. I'd wager professors of asian history would have a better idea of the "best" books out there, and would use them in their curriculum.

| Michael Breen's The Koreans has a decent summary of recent Korean history (written before the economy nosedive, though) as well as lots of discussion on culture. |
