i know a lot of you dont like me, but whatev..
im getting kinda nervous, anxious, excited and scared all at the same time just knowing that in 48 hours ill be in a completely different place. i expect all familiarities will be gone, until i get acclimated a little bit. hopefully things will work out, it seems like looking for a job in person is the way to go though. |

It'll be easier than you think; take your time if you can do so. If you need a place to stay let me know and I might be able to find something. I'm good at looking for small rooms to stay in for a month or two.
Who doesn't like you? I don't remember anything of that sort. Anyway, the weather's getting nicer so you picked a good time to come. |

Oh right, now I remember. I just looked at the other thread regarding rooms. Okay, you should be fine then. Make sure you print out the map to the place before you arrive! If you've already decided on where to live, that is. The map must be clear enough for a driver to understand it, otherwise you'll pay more for the cab or will have to look for it yourself and the luggage might be heavy... |

im staying with my friends grandma whos 80 and doesnt speak any english. it'll be an interesting experience living with her. anyone know what i should get her as a gift? ill give her some $ for utilities too. i should be able to stay with her about a month, before her daughter is visiting and kicking me out. i should have a job by then hopefully. since im not taking my computer, im having to print out a lot of the threads that i've saved from this forum in case i need any help. plus i dont plan to go out at night, which should give me time to do some research on where i need to go the following day. |

Huhn?
It doesnt matter... as long as your money holds out (save the partying for after you get a job) and you aren't super picky, you'll be able to land something pretty quickly. |

pc rooms are all over the place and they are only W1,200 per hour. (here anyway). You dont have to print many things out except maps. |

i hope its as easy as you say it is to get a job. the reason im printing a lot of stuff out is cuz i have the links and info on my home computer. since i wont be taking my computer with me, i wont be able to access a lot of the websites and links i've saved over the months researching positions. |

There's these new things, see, they call 'em recordable CDs...
Or yank out the hard drive and take it with you. It takes less than 5 minutes to do.
Or send all your bookmarks in an email to a free acount (Gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc.) that you can access from Korea.
Heck, if you had to, you could use those wierd floppy thingies (but all the kids in the PC bangs will probably laugh at you).
Honestly, not even one of these options occurred to you?

Or maybe opening an online email acct like Yahoo, Hotmail, or Google, and emailing the links to yourself, so you can retrieve them whenever you log in at a PC Bang??? |

you caught me in the middle of a re-write...
what do they say "great minds think alike"?
Or is it
"fools seldom differ"?

Re: gifts for grandma...
I'm not sure where you are from, but the gift culture here has its share of surprises for a Canadian like me. My coworkers each got a huge box of Spam for Lunar New Year, for example. I visited a woman for lunch last week and was sent home with a stack of counterfeit Nike socks. I've been given sheets of seaweed as a gift too. This stuff all seems really random to me, so I suspect it's hard to go wrong, as long as it's presented nicely.
I was told yesterday that when you visit a home, it's considered nice to bring a gift of soap or matches, which symbolize prosperity.
If you are coming from the West Coast of North America, I think smoked or preserved salmon would be appreciated, since fish is prominent in the Korean diet, but salmon is quite rare as far as I can tell.
Good luck! |

A slight riff on bulsajo's idea about taking out your hard drive is to buy an external hard drive to easily take all your data with you. With that and a USB cord, I would think you'd be all set at the PC bang. That's what I plan to do.
Costco online has a 160 gigabyte external drive for $140. That should last you awhile. |
