Attention VanIslander, you're wanted on the keen place thread, to provide information on 'The Isle of Fantasy' (within reason).

Mokpo or Wando....they remind me of Yeosu.

Wando is smaller and cleaner...Mokpo is a similar size, and I would say comparable to Yeosu.

No, nowhere. Nowhere in this relatively small penninsula noted for its homogeneity is like Yeosu.

Sokcho tops my list of small little cool places with lots to do, nature and laid back, friendly people.

(I like Sokcho on the northeast coast but have yet to see its warmer seasons.)

Yes, Yeosu is great, as is many underhyped places along the southern coast.

I highly recommend one visit Namhae island. It's the third largest island, between Geoje Island in the east and the Yeosu peninsula in the middle of the southern coast.

Namhae has a popular summer destination, Sangju beach, which puts Haeundae in Busan to shame, in my opinion. I've been there several times and foreigners are rare; often I'm the only one. remember: Sangju.

I've spoken at length about Geoje island in other threads, so I'll let it be, and just say I wish captain kirk could've seen more than just a highway glance at some of its charms on his trip down here.

Personally I really dig Sorok-do (Chollanam-do, south of Kohung). The leper colony is extremely beautiful in the spring. Also right near the ferry terminal is an open fish market. The ajumas will slice up your fish on the spot and you can have a great picnic before taking the ferry over to Sorok-do. On a side note, taking a car is a good idea (if you have one) but busses do run there from Suncheon.

Yeosu also has $$$ going for it: buddies down there are making 45-50000/hr for one-on-ones.

VanIslander, I'm just messin' with you. Goje (seeing it) was a nice place. I've never seen anything quite like it, not in Korea, anyway. So many trees...but I can't describe it well because it was only part of a day.
I was tempted to buy a pair of parrots in Yeosu the one time I was there. The guy wanted (I think it was) 500,000 won for the two of them. It was Summer and they were out on the street, on the sidewalk in front of his pet store. As big as African Greys, but mostly crimson/Cardinal colour. With a bit of blue and green around the edges of the wings. I don't know much about parrots, but that was a steal, a real deal. Home was a day and a half driving away, and I was on a motorcycle. And anyway, who needs two, big, squawking parrots, practically speaking?

Chindo Island was pretty cool to visit, has a bridge going to it. I remember seeing an ancient fort on a hill/mountaintop (seen from the highway) and, of course, Chindo dogs. Outside houses, etc., certainly more than I'd seen anywhere else and in one place.

Tongyeong, the self-described Naples of the Orient, is located on the southeast coast, where the bridge is to Geoje Island. Lots of great small islands around there, some nice beaches, and the town Tongyeong itself is quite charming down by the bay, and is the host of some good festivals and concerts.

Tongyeong is nice, not too far from Goseong, which'll be the site of the World Dinosaur Conference 2006.

But you really have to do your homework or access the tourist info centre to get to the best spots.
