|
|
Back in 2000 when I first came as a tourist, it seemed to me that line 1 was under going a color change. It was no longer the red line but was now the dark blue line. I've noticed, further, no other subway line since has used the red color, although you'd think it was a good primary to use. Here we have an apple green line (line 2) and an olive green line (line 7). We even have a pink line. How gay. But no red line since.
So, I can only imagine the color change came about because of some association between red and death. Like how you should not write the name of a Korean in red ink because when they die their name gets written in red into their little family book.
(A friend who taught here a long time ago said once he wrote an adult student's name on the board in red chalk. He noticed the guy made an expression in horror. The next day, after class, the Korean guy asked the teacher to re-write his name on the board but in white chalk. So he did. The guy looked at his name for a second and then erased it from the board.) |

| I think they're bringing back the red to show the express lines from Seoul Station to Cheonan and Juan. The one down to Suwon/Cheonan looks pretty useful as I head down to Suwon quite a bit from Sindorim - as far as I can remember it stops at Guro, Anyang and Suwon skipping about 10~12 stops inbetween. |

I've not heard about this, have you got a link? I know some people who might be interested in that line |

Can't help out with a link, but they've changed a lot of the route maps on line 1 trains to show the new express line. I think they're still working on getting it set up at the moment but it'll be great when it's operational.
The express train out to Juan has been running for a few years now (think it goes Guro --> Bucheon --> Songnae --> Bupyeong --> Juan) and is pretty useful for cutting down travel time on the subway to Incheon. |

| My problem with Line 1 is that it's not really dark blue. It's purple. |

I have a problem with the orange line and the brown line. The colors look the same sometimes to me. I think the orange, when it becomes faded and dirty, starts to look like the brown. Many times I've not been paying attention, see what I think is the brown line interchange, only to find out I've gotten off at the orange line interchange. |

I'm not an expert on Color Theory but it does seem that they could have choosen a bit more contrast for the Subway line graphics.
As an aside have you ever noticed that it seems koreans see colrs a bit differently than westerners? Sounds crazy, but my students always call colors by different names, the'll call pink-red, blue-green, vis-versa, etc. I know there are language differences as well that influence what english words they use to describe, but the differences I noticed in class did not seem to account for this. Maybe these slight color nuances are are very drastic color differences for Koreans?
Anyways, it is a pain in the ass, having to stare so closely at the subway signs does make us tourists look a bit more touristy.
Nevertheless, Turkish Delight is quite good. |
