Yesterday I saw a couple of mothers come into the hagwon to talk with the boss. Looks like they want to send their kids to our hogwon but first they want to see my degree and passport. They want to make sure I am teaching legally in Korea. Must of seen the programme on MBC. Kind of annoying, but if all parents did this I'm sure it would root out a few illegal teachers. |

Show them your degree?--no problem, just slap a copy of into a nice frame and hang it up somewhere in the hagwon.
Your passport? Well they can get on a boat to Buzz-Off-Itty-Land, that's pretty intrusive IMHO.
Let Mr Hagwon Director show them a copy of whatever Immigration Visa OK Paper he has for you instead, it's not up to you to prove to the parents you have a work visa. |

Make a copy of your degree and ARC and give it to your boss. He can then show it to all the mothers who insist. . . I mean, ask for proof of legality. |

To be honest, I don't blame them.
Most schools that I have ever worked at kept photcopies of at least my passport on file and usually a copy of my ARC as well.
I would get an noterized copy of your pasport and degree and frame and hang them in your school over your desk ...
I am not joking ... The KG is on the warpath the and the forewarned is the forearmed ... |

Look, I'm a language student.
I don't care if my teacher has a degree or not.
I just want to learn language. |

If you do copy your passport and your ARC to show to parents, be sure to block out the numbers. Why? Identity theft for starters. It's not very common in Korea yet, but it's on the rise...counterfit ARC's are on the increase.
I had an argument with a former director who wanted to put my ARC number on my business card. If that had been allowed, it would only take a person semi-aware of my banking institution to get into my account. You only need an ID number, name and account number to get access to account information over the phone. Slap a new picture on to a counterfit card with your information and someone can ruin your time here and possibly when you return.
I have no problem with letting parents see my passport or ARC, but I'm not going to post copies with all of the relevant information for anyone and everyone to see.
Photocopy the degree, no problem. See the original, not likely as immgration and the education board have both seen it. Let the parents take that up with the director or immigration or the education board.

Your boss should have a notorised copy (or original) of your degree and a copy of your passport if he got you into the country legally; why should it even concern you? |

I was already in country when i got my job.
Like I said earlier I don't have a problem with showing my degree. My passport I'm not to sure about showing. Apparently the parents want to make sure I am Canadian. I guess there are many people in Korea pretending to be Canadian.
I'll be sure to blot out the numbers on any photocopy of my passport and ARC. |

Sure what the hell I'd say. Many people might not get in a taxi these days without seeing the cabbie's photo ID posted. Parents pay a lot of money to these schools. It's in their interest to make sure they're getting what they pay for. |

LOL!!
Our school photocopies and frames them for everyone to see, along with the "Whitey Wall," of all the pictures of the foreign teachers. |
