|
|
I'm hoping the KBL is not totally lame as I have a severe basketball addiction. Anyone attend these games? If so, please feel free to offer your perspective!
Thanks!

I'm a big fan of basketball, and I have to admit that the Korean league isn't up to the standard I'd hoped it would be. Even the imports aren't anything special to talk about.
That said there seems to be a fairly good atmosphere at the games and the spectators really get into it. |

There are some pretty funky rules in the KBL designed at keeping the level of the imports down...
-----------------------
1) Salary Cap & Payment
-Teams must sign their players by September 30th.
-Players will earn their pay from September 1st to March 31st(end of the regular season)
-Total Salary for the U.S players (2 player) should not exceed by 280,000 U.S dollars
-The highest salary for one player is 200,000 U.S dollars. Before this year, the highest salary should not be exceed by only $100,000.
-Monthly pay for the U.S. players should not exceed by 40,000 U.S. dollars.
-Playoffs Bonus : each team can pay 20,000 U.S. dollars if the team wants.
-NO TAX for the U.S. players.
-Teams will provides the apartment, every meal, and other things to live in Korea without any payment.
-Players can be cut throughout the year (each team can change their U.S players two times before 5th Round - KBL regular season is consisted of the 6 rounds : total 54 games)
2) The Qualifications for the players
-There will be no TRY-OUTS for the U.S. players anymore. Instead of that, each teams can sign the players directly.
-No age and college limitation
-But, a players who plays more than two seasons for the NBA(from 2002~2004), can not play for the KBL
-The player who are taller than 6'10"(208.2cm), cannot play for KBL
-The total height regulation for the foreign players in each team (2 player) should not be exceeded by 400cm.
3) If team offend against the rules about salary cap
-Team will be fined one million u.s. dollars.(maximum)
-Players will not play for the KBL forever.
-Team must play the 18 games without one foreign players.
-People who report the teams for the misconduct, will get paid 1 mil. |

I go to games maybe twice a month down here in Changwon.
However...the LG Sakers are really sucking it up this season. In the last three months they have gone 4-22 so it is painful to watch.
it is good fun...the quality isn't the best but you can still yell at the players and have a good laugh.
Tickets are cheap...courtside is only 10 000 won so it is a good afternoon. |

It's a good way to kill a winter Sunday afternoon, but the quality is definitely sub-standard. I'd venture that - because of the US sports machine - many 4A high school games in the States would be better than what you'll regularly see here.
Those rules regarding foreign players are, understandably, designed to showcase local talent, but the problem is that they diminish the overall level of play. I mean, look at the NBA, they don't exclude foreign players because they're too tall or due to quota systems. Talent is what counts, bottom line.
Perhaps in the future, Korea will try to become "The Basketball Hub of Asia" and open up the league to more foreign players. |

there are some ballers from the NCAA that were quite good. Guys like Freeman, White and Scales can play the game.
Its not the NBA, but it isnt all that bad. (Its like watching the Raptors without the soap opera; DAMN BABCOCK!) |

It is an eagle i do believe.
You gotta give it to the Koreans...they sure are not imitating american sports teams mascots whic can be a bad habit in other countries.
What is there???
LG Sakers
KTF Magic Wings - what is a magic wing???
Ulsan Mobis - name of auto division.
Wonju Xers
KCC Egis - what is an Egis???
SK Knights - alittle more normal
Samsung Thunders - another normal one
SBS Stars - maybe the most boring of the lot.
Jeonja Land Black Slammers - too many sojus???
Deagu Orions - name of team owning company and a star.
This is a rarity in Korea, but 9/10 for originality |

From what I've seen, Alex Scales is the best player in the league.
Didn't Desmond Penigar (Utah State University) have a 40+ game recently? |

i am a follower of the KBL. My team is the SK Knights...but since coming back to the states, i haven't followed it as much.
the best player this year in the KBL IMO is Kris Lang of UNC. He gets everyone involved and plays hard each game.
The gripe about the KBL that I have is that they change their foreign players too often...but a 100k for 6 months isn't too bad.
as for the black slamer name, when the team name was anounced 2 seasons ago, i emailed the league to inform them that there is no such word as "slamer"....they responded that the spelling is correct. |

Thanks for the info. It looks as though I won't have to go cold turkey after all.
One more question if you don't mind...
I will be located in Osan (I am not in Korea at the present time) and would like to know which KBL team is the closest to me. I have to be able to root for a team you know! I'm assuming it will be one of the Seoul teams. Granted; however, I do not know how the transportation system works...so closest might not necessarily mean most convenient. Any info will be much appreciated!

Lang is a presence, but I haven't seen him have near the effect on a game that Scales has, offensively and defensively. The problem with Scales, and why I think he got cut from the Rockets and Nets is that he doesn't seem to be a great ball handler. Seems poor to me, actually. |
