Just jumping on this thread here, but if anyone wants to have some serious fun with their bikes, why not go racing with it in Korea - I did!
They have a 125cc class which races with HSRC EXIV's. Some folks modify the bleep out of them, and they can clock up to around 150 klicks. But the novice class is supposed to have limited mods which keeps the speeds a bit lower (although there are always cheaters).
There's also another series that has scooter racing as a support race to a small car racing series. I believe the scooters were by Daelim, but I can't recall which model...
If you're really serious about it, there's always the full-blown 1000cc superbike class. |

i am scared of riding them and i am scared to have loved ones ride them as well.
that said, we just bought this,
any comments that will lesson (or support) my fear are welcome! |

Oh Ody... that colour!? I think your biggest concern might be not being taken seriously...
Sorry. I don't mean that. (much) 
But you're quite right to have a healthy fear of crippling yourself, losing your life or a loved one riding in Korea. It happens every day, it happens to newbies and pros alike. It's happened to friends of mine who I considered better, more experienced riders than myself.
Every time I ride across town, I see a few new spray-painted ovals & oblongs on the streets. Always the same: the four L-shaped markers for the wheels of the car/bus that hit them, and the crumpled-body white outline of "there but for the grace of God and quicker reflexes..."
Some basic safety tips: helmets always; learn to jump ahead of the herd or let it pass you; create 'buffer zones' when you ride in traffic; play it super safe & slow till you can anticipate the daredevil antics of other drivers at SPECIFIC INTERSECTIONS where you'll be riding; always expect potholes -- even on major streets -- when you ride at night, and especially when you're not intimately familiar with the area.
A good friend of mine eff-ed up his spine real good from a pothole in a MAJOR intersection in Seoul that he passed every day on his way to work. He didn't lose control or crash, but he clearly took a helluva jolt. The hole was small and invisible at normal speed at night. Being right in the centre of the lane, cars and busses would straddle it and not even know it's there. Because of that, my friend can now look forward to a lifetime of recurring back problems. He's a 7-year veteran of the streets of Seoul, and that was his only injury to date. |

I don't know if you were lucky.
I don't know if I was unlucky.
But, I was informed that as a non-tourist visa holder, I MUST obtain a Korean driver's license....by the Choongnam Police Department on 2 different occasions and by Kyonggi PD once.
I was stopped about 12 times while in Korea, 9 of those times I was not asked for my license. After the 3rd warning, I got my K-DL.
