Wow, I have never been to any of those places. I haven't even been to Seoul in well over a year. I always want to go, but I never can leave this beautiful city, Gwangju, it seems. |

By the way, my vote for the MOST UNDERRATED bar in Seoul: that joint in Sinchon around the corner from Woodstock, down in the basement, with all the graffiti on the walls. Back in the day it was known as "Bar 33", but it has a Korean name I can't remember. When it gets rowdy enough in there, the clientele (a good mix of waygook and hankook saram) dance on the tables. |
Actually, that probably was ME dancing on the tables!! Sheesh, I lived in Shinchon in 2000-2001 and danced on tables too many times to remember.. haha.. now when I go in there alot of the foreigner faces have changed.. but the local koreans and some of the foreigners who've been staying in the same area i still see there often.. by the way, just for the record, i haven't danced on any of those tables in two years since i left Shinchon.. but I still go there whenever i'm in the neighborhood maybe i'll get another chance, huh? sheesh, i hope not.. i was just overly comfortable when i lived there before.. drinking there 5 nights a week, as i lived so close i'd drop by all the time, will definetely do that to a guy!

that would be 'nori haneun saramdeul', no? underneath 'the bar'? a big favorite of tiger beer's, I believe.
MI is massively overrated. Haven't been able to tolerate that place for more than 30 minutes in the past. MWG might not be all that, but it definitely owns MI. |
Yep, I love 'nori haneun saramdeul'! I spent almost an entire year in that bar! If I'm anywhere near Shinchon I definetely go in.. thats definetely the place indytrucks is describing! Sheesh, now everyone will be there!! Actually, I've been going there the last few weekends as well, and everyone does go there.. the word is definetely out on that one..
MI is overrated.. I've been there once.. actually I had a great time the one time I went.. made a girlfriend that I hungout with for a couple weeks until she realized I'm not really the 'going-out with the girlfriend on weekends' type.. (at least not in Seoul - at home no problem! here, too much excitement on weekends)

Yeah, very difficult to find a seat in Geckos.. I prefer to be there right about GI curfew time.. but actually I found that the GI's in there are not aggressive at all.. they aren't that bad to talk to.. usually older guys.. and they just want to drink a beer and seem somewhat uninterested in the girls.. much different than the English teachers scouting out the chicas and a little wired from teaching.. looking kind of like this: |

You want to see [or avoid] agressive GIs? Check out [stay away from] King's Club in Itaewon. |

I see the most aggressive and obnoxious GI's at BURGER KING! that place kind of creeps me out at times!! and also when i'm crossing the BK street.. and just listening to the teenager-like conversations.. (referring to the 18-year-old GI's who just actually graduated from High School last year)..
But inside Geckos, fortunately, i've yet to meet that variety of them.. but then again i generally plan any trips to Itaewon to coincide right about with GI curfew times.. |

Wasn't there a knifing or a shooting in {or right in front of} Burger King 2 or 3 years ago? Not the incident where the US Army doctor was murdered, but another incident... |

Whenever I went to Seoul, I was dragged to some of those places, but I always felt like an idiot sitting around eating a hamburger and watching TV. Didn't the Nashville have a "No Koreans Allowed" sign up for years? No thanks.
I always preferred the makkoli houses in the backstreets of Insa-Dong, or a pojangmacha somewhere. Hongdae, too, was a lot of fun.
Now Kwangju, on the other hand, has some great places:
1) The shacks next to Sajik Park, where the city's artists come to jam 'til the wee hours. Even better if you can sing or play guitar
2) That weird lesbian bar in gu shi chung
3) Kim Sat Gat Soju Bang - a million kinds of soju, most of them good
4) KJ Park
5) "An Artist Prepares" - an evening of 100% pure Korean cheese |

yeah..."norae haneun saramdeul" was a place where all the European students at our school would go and hang out at in 2000. Our whole dorm ended up having an end of year party there. all i remember is that the bathrooms are a bit ancient and that they serve tequilla shots there. |

hmm.. i wonder if i was there that night.. i remember one night a group of foreign students had the whole place to themselves.. i went in there and drank myself with them.. actually i don't think i was allowed to be there as it was kind of closed party.. but since i looked foreigner.. and the working staff new me already i was able to get a seat at the bar .. plus when i was walking down the stairs i started talking to some random foreigners so i think i looked like i was part of it.. and actually i think it was one of the students who was checking at the door.. and since i was already involved in conversation, they just asked me if i'd like to join even though it was a closed party.. i think it was on a thursday or possibly a wednesday night.. (it wasn't the weekend).. hmmm.. i wonder |

yea, that was it...it was in the middle of the week...that's about all i can remember. there were so many people there that i didn't know, so it probably was that same night. all i remember is that it was quite fun and people ended up dancin on the tables. |

Forget that, that's probably why the last time I was in that shat hole the beer tasted like Vinegar (a korean favorite beer cutting liquid along with water) Don't frequent that place, they raised the prices of the pitchers, plus they only have 2,000cc pitchers, not a good variety. Go to Dang Dang Dang, down the street form there, they have flavored beer pitchers, crazy stuff, if you're into it, or the Nothing Bar (chinese symbol) great interior, statuettes of mens and womens genitalia litter the walls, and they got 3k pitchers, but if you can, go to Posokjung, on the first street by Yonsei in shinchon, free makoli to foreigners, they will hate that word got out. And across the street from Zen bar on the main raod in shinchon is Harlem, go there, funny place. |
