Hi everyone - just arrived 3 days ago and Sogang university recommended me to get a foreigner card. I need 3 photos, Sogang enrollment certificate and 50,000 won. I've heard that the card is pretty useless and that you can't even use it on the internet. I have my bank account and mobile phone etc all sorted out without the foreigner card, so should I even bother getting one? Thanks.

I'm guessing he means the Alien Registration Card (ARC). You must get one. It's an immigration requirement. We all have them here.

The Alien Registration Card.

It's not an option - you MUST get one and you have 14 days to do it. After that, you are fined 100,000 for being late.

Alien Registration Card

Alien Registration
Any foreign national staying in Korea for 91 days or more must register as a resident alien. This includes periods of more than 90 days after losing Republic of Korea citizenship, acquiring foreign citizenship, or the birth of a foreign citizen. When you register as an alien, you are issued an Alien Registration Card. Your Alien Registration Card is needed in a variety of circumstances, and you are legally obliged to have it on your person. Alien registration should be done at the Immigration Office with jurisdiction for the area in which the applicant lives. The purpose of registering foreign nationals is for the fair supervision of resident foreigners, by clearly defining their residence and status. Citizens of the Republic of Korea are subject to the Resident Registration System.

Yes, you must get one of these cards. You are supposed to carry it with you at all times. It will essentially be your ID while in Korea.

You will need it for banking and some other things as well.

You have 90 days to get it, not 14.
The fee is 10,000 won, not 50,000 won. Don't give thje money to your boss to handle it. Go with him.

Righty... this is more serious than I thought! I'm probably going to get one tomorrow with my ha-suk jib mother. Still seems like a waste of money though - at least it's 10000won not 50000won. Thanks for the replies!

I thought the 'foreigner card' was the power to get special treatment because you are a foreigner.

e.g. Your landlord comes knocking on your door asking for water rates. You don't wish to pay so you play the foreigner card: feign incomprehension and pretty soon the landlord will get frustrated and give up. Wink

I believe if you are a Canadian on a 180 day tourist visa, you don't have to get one.

The card ITSELF is 10,000 if it's lost/stolen or they have to issue a new one (first time) . You ALSO have to pay for the visa (single or multi-entry...different fees). It's REQUIRED!!!!!!!!!!! Well, if you have a job, that is!! Wink
