Now available for download from Microsoft. 360-day free evaluation copy.
Anyone out there with an Athlon64 that was waiting for it - it's here.
Hope this is useful to some people.

The free download has been around for a while, and reading any reviews will tell you to stay away from it. |

Which one? Build 1289, build 1433, or what?
They seem to be updating and releasing new builds every other week.
I quite like the fact that it's free for 360 days, and by then the real release will be out, and the most urgent bugs will be patched. In fact you can probably patch all the bugs as MS releases them, and in a year you can go ahead and buy it if you're happy with it.
What are the issues with it that you have most problems with?
For me, it's the lack of drivers for some of the programs I like to use, and the security holes that haven't been plugged yet.

I'm glad somebody out there is beta testing operating systems cause it sure ain't gonna be me.
It can't possibly be fun to have to do it, and if you like to do it just for the hell of it I have to admit that's a taste I haven't acquired.
Last time I did something similar was with winME (and my therapist says I only have 6 more sessions to go before I'm over it). |

If you buy a 64bit chip can you run vanilla XP on it? |

Yes.
I'm running both WinXP Pro and Win64 Pro - I get to choose which one I want to run during boot-up. I wouldn't advise just running Windows64, not yet. It still doesn't have the driver support, sadly. |
