I think The Cube is right; it's "propose" initially mispelled as "perpose," and then incorrectly edited as "prepose". You can see the 'r' and 'o'/'e' written darkly over what was there before (possibly "perpose").
BTW, what's with all the weird periods in the second one?
Keep well yourself, and my big. boy. Philip...
Anyway, whomever wrote that wasn't exactly John Steinbeck.

Thanks all.. "stomach" is likely it. Would have gotten it if I had the other page before it. I had put in "prepose" for the other one. I chose to re-write the letter in original context, including grammar and spelling mistakes. It doesn't change the meaning behind the sentence much anyway.
What you are looking at, BTW, are personal letters written to a very famous Korean person in the early 1900's, named Ahn Chang Ho. For whatever reason I don't understand, some Koreans are ultra-excited about these letters.
My guess it has something to do with offering proof of his whereabouts at the time of the bombing, listed below. Also, his citizenship.
Later, if it's OK, I will show you the rest of the letters -- am sure it's no big deal. I also poured over them, wondering if there was some kind of code in there, given the periods and weird capitol letters here and there. Doesn't seem to be, but who knows. People back in those days didn't use excellent grammar in letters, as they didn't erase or cross stuff out like we do all of the time. A lot of times they would just scribble something up and fire it off in the mail. Kind of like how we type online.
The "stomach" one was written by a Non-Korean. I am not sure about the other, but I assume the same.
Here is an article about the guy they were sent to:
