It's funny how many of the long-termers on this board come to the same conclusion.
It's hard to avoid. It's there in your face. After X amount years in Korea one starts to realise the cultural differences excuse thing just doesn't cut it.
The vast majority of Koreans are ignorant about the rest of the world. They are insular, parochial, and unjustifiably patriotic.
The apologists on this board are either blocking that out or they have been here less than one year. |
Funny...but most of the long-timers here ARE apologists, or would be labeled as such. A long while back there was a thread that turned into a flame fest between "whiners" and "apologists" and the "whiners" by a majority were the ones who "have been here less than one year." |

Just a few thoughts...
Everybody here is free to whine about Korea as much as, whenever, and wherever they want. Whining is not an exclusive right that only the tribal elders have "earned" and can therefore deny to the tenderfeet of the village. Nor is ranting acceptable behaviour only from the young-uns, while the oldies should know better. If you're looking for a whiner-free Korea, Go north, young man!
I don't care how many years I live here, I'll never surrender my right to whine with the best of them. Plenty of ex-pats who've been here longer than I have are incorrigible whiners.
If it seems like a lot of the 'old hands' are in the non-whiner/apologist camp, that's not because we don't mind the bad things or accept Korea's justiifications for them. No, it's because we've chawed on the same damned strips of cuttlefish for so long that they've lost all their flavour.
And also because we've seen a lot of things improve here. Dave's is a predominantly newbie hangout, and is therefore focused on what (in our wizened, long-timer eyes) are much smaller game: foreigners should be allowed to register on Korean websites; foreigners should be permitted to engage in the X, Y and Z businesses here on an E-whatever visa; authentic Mexican and vegan restaurants should be opened in Seoul, etc.
Just remember that even the crankiest of whiners are not de facto enemies of the state, and that even the most shameless Korea-hugging apologists are laughed at by Koreans themselves.
Now I'll turn up my hearing aid and resume listening...
Old rockin' chair's got me
Cane by my side
Fetch me that gin, son
'Fore I tan your hide... |

Smarty!
I was going to make that same comment back when the posters started "Repeating themselves. Repeating themselves" on the previous page. |

| I can't resist the one-liners these days. I don't get no respect. Cue segue...Neither do hookers. Discuss! |

So...What'd they say? |

The reason I am quite sure that Korean men are using "Russian" as a euphemism (sp?) for prostitute is because the girls I have met that say they keep getting asked if they are Russian would NEVER pass for Russian.
(prostitutes maybe... but certainly not Russian ones...)
Oh FINE I'll just say it...I'm talking about BIG girls...there isn't anything wrong with BIG girls but c'mon...Russian? |

What's your point? I was saying the scope was wider than people who would pass as Russian or Russian prostitutes. I didn't say only large girls were getting called Russian, but thanks for coming out... |

If you look back at what you said, you certainly weren't clear -- unless I'm on crack and don't know it. It reads to me like the women you know who are getting mistaken for Russians are all BIG (i.e. fat, no?) I guess that's not what you meant, but it's how I read it and I felt offended.
Anyway, your attitude in your most recent post on this thread surprises me a bit... perhaps I'm remembering things wrong but I have usually found you to be one of the nicer people posting on this forum. Your response reads a little nasty to me. |

What I mean is the long-termers don't whine about the same things as the 1st year guys do.
1st year people tend to complain about the lack of good cheese and how people bump into them on the sidewalk.
Long-termers are more likely to lament the deep problems they have noticed over time here. Like the unworldliness of the majority of Koreans and their inability to interact with foreigners on a relaxed, un-selfconscious level. That's what troubles me most about Korea after 4 years. I don't even noticed getting bumped on the sidewalk anymore. |

Hehe...yeah I used to be a friendly guy and then I moved to the Middle East and now I can't sleep so I get a little grumpy.
Sorry if you caught the teeth...
I was being a little sarcastic when I was talking about it to start with and maybe felt I was being a little mean to the bigger ladies. I guess I kind of expected to get slammed on what I was saying...then you threw me for a loop and misunderstood what I was saying...
But in fairness I think it was clear what I was saying...a lot of the girls I heard being called Russian (The sarcastic side of me wants to say, should be flattered) but that implies there is a problem with being bigger) So I will leave it with don't look Russian.
I wasn't saying that these were the only girls being called Russian, just that this leads me to believe Koreans use the word Russian for more than a nationality.
Anyway, nice to be remembered and who knows...maybe I'm still a nice guy. Though I doubt this thread is going to be the place to show it. |
