I was thinking of getting one and couldn't find an appropriate old thread. Was it a hassle if you don't know any Korean? I assume it'd be easy to keep the cost under W40,000 / month.
Any input appreciated. |
I bought a pre-pay used phone with a camera at TechnoMart for W110,000 including W30,000 in time, no other fees at all. I never talk on it (about 20 minutes in 2 months), but have sent 250+ text messages, so I have not needed to add any time. Very, very cheap. |

| Who are you people? I don't know anyone without one. I use over 1,000 minutes a month and pay about W65,000. It's the highest number of minutes available. I don't even have a land line. |

| For some reason a cellphone is much more useful in Korea than in the west. Can't quite figure out why. Really. I can't. |

Vice versa - I find my cellphone much less useful here. Mainly because the number of people I can and do text message has gone from around 100 people in 6 countries, to around 10 people in one.
Damn Korean networks and their lack of SMS interop with GSM networks. |

You know you can turn the ringer off on your phone, right? Or just not answer it. It should be a tool for your convenience, not the whim of others.
I have gotten a used phone for free with YesCard service. I did this twice and only paid W10,000 for my first block of prepaid time. I don't care what the phone looks like or what features it has. I want to place calls and send text messages.
And no trouble to "get rid of," either. Give it to a friend or throw it in the trash. |

Well, I never knew about "yes"|, but I bought a used phone for 50,000. Its a card phone. I pay 10,000 a month, but if I dont use the time durring the month I loose it. How do people pay an amount and let it linger for over a month?
I do not even use the 10,000 won, I just need the phone for emergencies. I have the worst sense of direction, and my friends are not keepers of time. When I meet people they are generally late, so the phone is used for "i'm late, where are u?" And when I go to someones house who is korean and I cant figure out where they live I hand the phone to the taxi driver and he gets me to where i'm going.
Another thing, I have children in my own country, and a mother who is 100% nuts, and I carry the phone in case i'm needed. Just serves me. The phone is LG by the way.
How do I get a service where I can pay 10,000 and just let it hang in there til its used?
Thanks. |

what's a card phone? I just go into KTF once every two or three weeks and give them 20,000 and it lasts another two or three weeks and any time I don't use carries over.
I also find a cell way more useful over here. I was always pretty anti cell phone and for my first month I didn't have one. My Korean friend living in Canada told me that it's essential for life here because that's how everyone lives and it's true. I missed so many calls my first month because of my landline because I'm not at home very much here. The cell is also essential for meeting people when you go out cuz it's always so goddamn busy. However, if I only hung out with other teachers or foreigners then there would be no point in the cell phone. |

Where do you get that for 11.000 won? I just asked my Korean friends at work and they never heard of that.
I pay 10,000 for 30 minutes and usually dont even use that.

| The place where I get it, is called "Jennys" phone shop just outside of Itaewon, near noksapyeong subway station. She deals alot with military and foreigners and she told me about it. It works out pretty well, its like using an overseas phonecard, but for your cell phone, and the rates are good in that you get 1hr53mins of local calls for 11,000. Thats the only place I've ever heard of it though. |

Yes and I don't know what I did without it.
It costs me on average about 25 000 won a month and i use it a lot.
I know in Australia I was getting up into the equivelent of 100 000 a month with ease and would use it less than here.
It is a lot cheaper here. |
