True enough KB but it is true that in most cases(and my evidence is only anecdotal here) that Korean American teachers are actually paid less than their caucasian counterparts because most Korean hagwon customers either A.) Want a white foreigner or "United Nations" as part of the hagwon package (I'm paraphrasing a Kyopo interviewed in Richard Harris' book) and B.) hold very strong prejudices that for some reason are not 'quite' native speakers (and I'm quoting a Korean I worked with here). |

Bingo. thats exactly what is happening from both sides of the fence.
male westerners blaming koreans for their problems ('i'm different! can't you treat me the same!') and male koreans blaming westerners for theirs ('i may be 30, live at home with my mom and play warcraft all day but i don't understand why i'm not married!).
and for the 1000th time, how can anyone claim that not to be prejudiced when applying blanket statements about the korean people?
'well those koreans are all racist to me, they're all the same...'
doctor phil says:
1. put it all into perspective.
2. take responsibility for your actions.
3. chill the f*** out. |

Wrong Willie.
Has an English teacher been convicted of a serious crime in Korea? Like child abuse?
Sure, foreigners get deported now and then for victim-less crimes like illegal teaching (something the average Korean will participate in without a qualm).
If there was a problem provoking these news reports then I would hang my head in shame at the conduct of my fellow foreigners. But there isn't.
Obseo.
Foreigners dating Korean girls is not illegal.
We have nothing to be ashamed of yet why are koreans blaming us for terrible things such as child abuse?
You are starting to sound like Homer Willie. Constantly apologising for Koreans like it's a programmed mantra.
Call it like it is sometimes. It's called truth. Have you been in Korea too long to remember what that is? |

Gotta agree with this 100%.
The only problem I have with this whole thing is that me dating a Korean girl= bad perveted man. To be honest I've gone out with my girlfriend as normal this week and same ol' same ol'.
Some people are looking(but most don't) but that thought is now in my mind, what are they thinking????
I know that 90% of Koreans hopefully have enough sense to realize that this is bullcrap but that 10% that are young and very unwordly are the problem.
Me...I'm just going to get on with life, it is too short. |

okay, let's look at the potential good in all of this.
I have been here longer than most. And to be honest, this is a tempest in a teapot.
This all started when Koreans actually learned about and bothered to read what non-foreigners were saying on the internet.
This historic moment cannot be overstated.
Of course, it's like a kid who finds his parents diary and scans to the only thing that interests him. "Little Bobby is such a brat", Mommy writes.
So Bobby goes apeshit. "Mommy, I can't believe that's what you think"
Of course Bobby doesn't read the blurbs where Mommy praises his finer points.
Anyhow, Korea is finally reading. Remember, it's two steps forward, 1.99 steps back on this wacky peninsula.
Believe it or not, I think this latest brouhaha is a blessing in disguise.
For the newbies, don't take this too seriously. It's all about Korea, and not about us. We are simply a mirror through which they are working out their millenia old issues.
But by all means, talk to every Korean you know (calmly) and tell them what you think about this. Many of them are listening. And a large percentage will nod in agreement. |

I'm not apologising for a damned thing. I'm calling you, and a few others a bunch of self-important tools who seem to think every last Korean is obsessing on where you stick your best your best friend on the weekend.
Not to mention the dumbness of having a bunch of guys who have always been quick to sling around the "All Koreans are..." slurs themselves being the loudest ones in these threads to yell about discrimination. Yet none of you seem to have the clairty of thought to realize that the people you're talking crap about (just as badly as you believe they're talking about you) includes your girlfriends and wives as well.. How'd they get excluded from the all emcompassing Korean bigotry? Is it due to them having the opportunity to bask in the glow of your superior white skin? Or them being exposed to our superior, NEVER-EVER RACIST cultures?
And then we have you all acting like actual victims of racism because of internet trash-talk and a tabloid TV show. The only thing that's going on here is that some of you have never been able to accept that you're NOT at the top of the social foodchain here, and you think every single slight the crosses your path, every single drunk that starts crap with you, and every single old guy who stares at you is doing it because they're imagining dragging you behind their truck like you were James Byrd.

Face it, you guys have been dying for a justification to vent all of your insecurities out on, and you found it. Good job, you must all be feeling complete. |

Blind Willie,
You desperately need a
A. Girlfriend
B. Friend
C. Religious "leader" guru, priest, pastor Monk-buddy
D. Confidant
Not every issue that comes up in relation to Korea/ESL is your own personal Idaho.
You definitely have a lot to say, and much, possibly most, deserves attention. But this isn't the place. Start a blog. Your voice needs to be heard, but here, it overwhelms. |

It is kind of ironic that you are named "Blind" Willie. Is that maybe because your head is stuck up your @ss? The issue is that Koreans can air garbage like foreign teachers are womanizers, child molestors and 95% of them are illegal. This is total and utter sh*t. Sure some posters like to make blanket statements about Koreans but most of these are relatively innocuous. Like, Korean men cheat on their wives and frequent room salons on a regular basis. Certainly I don't agree with this either but I think it is small potatoes compared to airing such verbal diarrhea on national television. I resent the fact that they can trash my good reputation for no good reason. Sounds like character assasination to me.
No Korean man is going to suffer because some poster on here says Korean men cheat on their wives. I may lose a job opportunity because of this "hate mongering". Or worst of all, I may be subjected to violence. Trying to compare the two is idiotic. |

Right... so well put. Can't be apologetic on this one. What they have done is totally racist and utter crap. |

Did you watch either of those two "News reports"??
They were on primetime TV. Millions of Koreans watched them. My boss is talking about it everyday. He's saying students are quitting because their moms are afraid to have foreigners teaching them.
In actual fact, it has been a contributing factor to my hagwon closing next month. I'm out of a job and these slurs against foreign teachers are part of the reason.
You don't think the way WE were presented on those shows warrants a complaint by US?
This is not my personal drama. It's our image which has been severely besmirched.
It's real Willie and it's centered on you and me.
Of course we don't know just what every Korean is thinking but I know my Korean friends and boss are very aware of this issue and seem to think I should be concerned about it.
I choose my Korean friends carefully. Most have lived in Western countries and they know that this is just sensationalist scare-mongering but I think I can speculate with confidence that many Koreans without the first-hand experience of knowing foreigners personally will believe this tripe and think you and me are bad, dangerous people.
You think that doesn't warrant a complaint from me? Or you? |

good let koreans dig themselves into a grave again!
I hope all mothers stop sending the kids to HAKWONS. then perhaps we will see a backlash from HAKWON owners who SHOULD be already standing up and saying this is blown way out of proportion!
but will they stick up for the 95% legal teachers here who have done nothng wrong>? of course not!
koreans are like sheep! so they will all act like it.. I hope this SBS news BS shuts down the ESL business for good!
then lets see what happens to korea in 50 years!
again koreans showing how childish they can be..
sometimes I wish our governments were as stupid and as childish as koreans.. then we could just stop all education visas into our countries and stop education these people who have no respect for us or our countries and education system!
I think its time korea got a few slaps across the face! to wake up!!
why dont our governments fight back abit!
perhaps we need to remind the world again how koreans beat dogs and eat them again! I think CNN and BBC really need to be reminded again!
I BET the koreans will put up a stink about that!!
just watch them back lash!! |
