Police to segregate foreign suspects
The National Police Agency said yesterday that as soon as next month it will set up foreigner-only cells to protect the rights of foreign suspects. An official said the move was to prevent trouble between Korean and foreign suspects in custody. Crimes committed by non-Koreans have risen from 5,221 in 2002 to 9,103 last year.
The agency said it will also change menus served inside police cells taking cultural differences into consideration. Muslims will not be served pork, and bread will be substituted for rice. It added that guidelines would be distributed to officers to make them aware of other countries' taboos.
To avoid misunderstandings during investigations the agency said it would prepare manuals with "Miranda-type" rights written in eight different languages and increase its number of interpreters.
