You know, it's gong to be pretty freaking cold up there.
Why don't you go somewhere nice and warm? |

Well "nice and warm" and "neck deep snow" aren't exactly synonymous. :)
I've been chasing winters for the last 3 years (travelling to Northern Hemisphere locales during Southern summers) and I want to get my fill of snow before I become an old fart and have to retire in the balmy weather. Besides 9 months of the year in Sydney is "nice and warm". I could do with a change. :)

| In that regard, Fernie looks like the right choice. Admittedly not the best for boarding due to the powpow, but I can make a little sacrifice on optimal snow if it means it means I'm comfortable. |
Not exactly sure what that means. I just spent two weeks riding honey pow in Sapporo (armpit deep) and Nagano (close), and I never have to ride anything else ever again. |

Maybe it's my technique, but I find it hard to find a good edge when the snow is too light.
I haven't had much experience, and the Australian snow is quite wet and slushy at times, so it's probably just me.. :)

I don't surf, but I get the feeling pow riding is a lot like it. It's not about edges as much as it is about floating. Your bindings are set way farther back on the board to facilitate that.
You're right about it being an experience thing: I couldn't do it at all until I had spent 4 months riding almost daily to get my technique down. |

| Oh wait, you're a snowboarder. Never mind. Go to Panarama in Invermere, BC or Mount Poley in NB. You don't need powder; you'll just push it away and crust is better for you. |
Yer insane. Boards need powder, and by the way, boarders are half the hill these days wherever you go. Save the skis-are-better thing for the 80's. Wait, they're over. |

Been quiet lately, mainly due to the fact I'm settling in on the mountain at Big White. Things are looking good in the season so far, and we're accumulating a nice base. The season should open this coming weekend, so fingers crossed for a big one.
Thanks to everyone who's posted on this thread. Helped me out greatly in sorting out where to head out in the end.
If you're coming up to Big White, let me know. :D

I heard once that Surrey BC held that distinction. |
