I just saw a don't litter commercial on Busan MBC. It had a couple of kids near a filthy with garbage river, and the message was let's be clean and not litter (I assume). First time I ever saw anything like that on Korean TV. It was sponsored by Busan Metropolitan City. |

The only problem is, there are not that many rubbish bins around. It is very difficult to find one.. may be a small one next to a bus stop that has a very small round flap.. other than that, there is virtually no bin anywhere. My husband said it's because they are afraid of bombs?! |

Lack of rubbish is not a factor. In Japan there are NO bins anywhere, and yet, litter is also mysteriously absent. It comes down to the discipline of people, and their respecting their surroundings enough not to throw their garbage in the street.
I should say here that this is not a trash issue, but a visible, public trash issue. Most developed countries produce huge amounts of rubbish. Korea, unlike most, seems to have little problem with leaving it out for everyone to see. Maybe this ad will change that. Hell, even if it only changes Busan, twenty years from now the difference in living conditions might prompt the rest of the nation to follow. |

Before the 2002 World Cup there were a bunch of PSAs encouraging Koreans to toss their garbage in receptacles. There were also ones discouraging the locals from reading foreigners' newspapers over their shoulders.
I think they (the PSAs) worked for a few weeks. Too bad the World Cup can't be held in Korea everyday, forever. Or can't it?
