Scandals Rock schools: Korea Has Long Way to Go in Education Reform
The prosecution Friday brought Sogang University's admissions scandal to an end by arresting two professors involved.

Sogang University chancellor Ryu Jang-son and 17 faculty members tendered their resignations on Thursday, taking responsibility for the school's admissions irregularities. A professor who previously served as manager of the admissions office, identified as Kim, was accused of asking a professor, Lim, to include a certain question in an English essay test for Kim's son last year.

At Anyang Art High School, eight high-ranking school officials and 51 parents were allegedly involved in admissions irregularities. According to the police, the 47-year-old principal, identified as Choi, and seven other officials took a total of 415 million won from 60 parents seeking admission for their children from March 2001 to July 2004.

In a separate case, six teachers were allegedly engaged in an exam scandal and tutoring on behalf of a former prosecutor's son at Paichai High School in southeastern Seoul.

Academic Pay: Annual Salaries
Pohang University of Science and Technology has the highest annual salaries at around 67 million won.
Yeungnam University (62.7 million won), Sungkyunkwan University (61.7 million won), Korea University (59.5 million won), Hannam University (58.3 million won) and Hoseo University (56.4 million won).
The lowest-ranking school paid an average annual salary of 28 million won. The annual salary of first-year professors ranged from 17 million won at Cheju National University to 43 million won at Sungkyunkwan University.

Average Monthly Salary of Korean Professors
According to the 2001 College Education Advancement Index which the Korean Council for University Education (KCUE) announced on the 13th, full-time professors' average monthly wage (before taxation) last April was 4,914,000 won, which is 12.2 percent higher than the previous year 4,379,000 won. Also, deputy professors, assistant professors, and full-time lecturers had similar increases in their salaries.

Seriously, it seems that every single person arrested is only identified by the family name of 'Kim.' No other surname is getting arrested.

Yes, it's been a tough past few months for the Ministry of Education, regarding the media. Unfortunately, given the scope of corruption, all that we're seeing and will see are their public actions which will equate to the same force of the image of a salaryman brushing his shrimp chips off of his desk, straightening his tie, and organizing his papers a bit, until the angry customer leaves and goes off somewhere else.
