There are decent Korean classes available in Seoul. The free Saturday classes near Sookmyoung Women's University are decent, and the price is definitely right. The only problem with them is that they are on Saturday, and only Saturday. I liked YBM's classes, and I found that there was a good mix of grammar, conversation, and listening practice. That's all I have experience with, but I'm starting Sogang next month ( Very Happy ), I hope it's as good as everyone says it is.

As for the OP, it definitely sounds like you need a different teacher. If you stay with your current school, will you get a different teacher? Don't give up on the classes, it sounds like you have a crappy teacher, but that's easy to change. If you get out of the habit of going to class, it's all too easy to never go back.

It sounds to me like you should try doing something different. I like to try doing "real" things with Korean when I'm getting sick of textbook study. TV has a lot of choices, the karaoke cotests and close-captioned concerts are great. Learning songs from bugs is good. Reading is great, you can always find something that suits your level. Try doing a language exchange or finding someone to talk to (cab drivers and the extraneous college kids who work at bars are great for that). When I find Korean actually useful I feel motivated to try harder at it.

Hey,

Are we in the same class??? now I am curious. There arent many native english speakers in my class so it would seriously limit the possibilities of your identity.

You are right.... we do 3 different grammar "formations" a class, then a once or twice aroudn the room and move on. I have an hour of homework a night. No time to really identify with it.

Personally I am going take 2 steps back, start again with the start of the beginning of the text and go hard with repetition and vocabulary. I am just hoping I can keep motivated. That was the big reason I took that class. It made me work.

I feel sorry for the "tramp" who cant make friends. But looking at most of the foreingers here it doesnt surprise me.

Absolutely. In six or eight months...and this time at a university program.

I think you need a better teacher more than a break. There is nothing wrong with teachers using only korean... but only if the students understand.. yeah, find a better class/teacher

Dont take a break. Instead along with your classes, increase the amount of time you spend self studying, along with actual conversation in Korean with Koreans while deliberately using the grammar points that you learned at school. You know you are making progress when you 'feel the burn'. Dont give up now.

When you're feeling burnt out, just listen to song after song, reading the lyrics and without caring too much about what they mean. Just follow along and chill. Korean songs, of course.

No one has mentioned exposing yourself in English again, periodically, to give your mind a break. I don't know if there's any research on this, but the two times I was acquiring new languages (American Sign Language and Spanish, for the curious) and was in situations where I had to function in them, I found myself exhausted. I seemed to progress faster if I gave my brain time to cool off -- that is, if I had a chance to get back to English for a little while. Even just a few hours. The brain shuts down once it's overloaded, right, and can't take in or process new information? If you're feeling overwhelmed, I wouldn't say to drop the class necessarily, but don't bombard yourself with Korean without taking periodic rest breaks for your mind, just as you'd do (I hope) for your hands and eyes when working on a computer for a long time.

All good ideas, and thank you everybody for the advice and encouragement. I definitely think changing the teacher will help. When the teacher spends 60% of the class fluttering around like a hummingbird on caffene, explaining a grammar point, and then everybody breaks into their respective English or Japanese student groups to try to figure out together what she's saying, there's definitely something wrong.

Last month we had a better teacher...she taught grammar a lot too but did it nice and slow, lots of explanation repetition, gave us time to figure it out, and lots of practice in every class to use it. I know from teaching kids and from teacher training courses that you CAN'T teach something quickly, race through it, and just stare at everybody, expecting them to understand what you're trying to get across at first try.

I gave up last week...just hung out in coffee shops, played a few computer games, hit Bandi and Lundi's and read a few books. It was a welcome relief. I'm not giving up on KOREAN, not at all...I'm not going to let these last few months investment go to waste. I'm starting back at work next week, what the hay.

It's interesting...at the end of last month, just before our first test, I had this strange feeling of overload in my head. It felt like a small migraine or I was on the verge of a stroke or something, and I was having a bit of trouble with Korean. I took a break for a couple of days, got completely away from it. But then when I went back, stuff that I found difficult before, was easy. I guess my brain was laying down new wiring.

Sometimes -- as both a teacher and a student -- I wish some pharmaceutical company somewhere would come up with a pill that would make it as easy for adults to learn languages as it is for kids. Something like 'viagra for the brain' that would make it as easy for adults to lay down new neural pathways while language learning, and temporarily restore that neural flexibility we have as kids. I'm sure it will eventually happen someday.

Mithridates, I will have to try to start listening to pop songs...good idea, haven't done that yet.

I know it's been talked about tons already, but using Bugs for studying through songs is teh greatness... I've been doing it since I came here and only had the very basics to just learn little bits of vocab and such, all of which I have retained FAR better than through typical studying. I just wanted to understand songs like 豤's "̵ " and DJ Doc's "Run to You"... It doesn't even feel like studying to me, cuz I just want to fully understand the songs' meanings. Did the eternal classic "޸" by Crying Nut ("!") and "! ׳!!" by Witches (" ") today- This song actually had a really good flash animation done on it... check out http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/ddautta.php.

All the better if you like singing, too... Vocal abilities notwithstanding, doing 'em in 뷡 is ultra-fun, and it helps me cement the language connections, too.

I've actually only really attended a month's worth of classes (just a few hours a week) since I started studying. They definitely help and everything, but with work and stuff, there's so many other ways I prefer to learn... That said, my grammar is usually pretty funky, so there's definite merit in attending classes, too...

Sorry, did I hurt your feelings with my last comment?

I said it as a joke, but now I'm starting to really believe that, with your attitude, people wouldn't want to genuinely be your friend.

Sorry,

HAHA no you didnt hurt my feelings. It just came off wrong I guess............
Sometimes sarcassim is a little hard to pick up. I have grown a distaste for alot of the foreigners here. The ones who get frustrated or even when people here dont speak English well. They have that "what do you mean you dont speak English" tone in their voice.

Or the guys who talk about the people they know as "contacts" or "connections" not friends or aquaintences.

Sorry if I took your shot as serious but like I said, sarcassim is a little tough to pick up.

Cheers

Sounds like you've tried a LOT harder than most of us. You should give yourself a pat on the back.

Not worth a new thread but anyways, anyone know of a site with translations and vocab of this song like on mith's site? No luck with Google yet... hey maybe it is on mith's site already and I just can't find it.

 ׳ that is...

Edit: http://www.myke.co.uk/entries/00000161.htm ...not too great but it's a start.

Just start a new thread with a title relevant to your question man.

You're ressurecting a thread that had a max one week shelf life.
The issue being discussed is no longer an issue.

I read the first few entries, saw the date, and then skipped to the end to find out why you brought it back. Do what you want of course, but I don't think you'll have much luck with this.

Or I might be wrong.

Either way, have a good one.
