searched the tech' pages but couldn't find an answer, but i wondered if anyone could recommend a file shrinking programme? i have downloads of movies i want to burn to cd but they are too large to fit (the memory on each cd is around 700mb) so which is the best to use? i have seen ashampoo advertised, is it worth it?
any help gratefully recieved

I just buy bigger CDs. They come in 800 and 870MB varieties, so try that. Also, in Nero, one can burn files a bit larger than 700MB, provided one finalizes the disc when burning. I think it goes to about 730~...?

Speaking of Nero..

I wanted to shrink a home movie MPEG video down to 700 mb so I could burn for a friend who doesn't have a DVD player. Just a CD-rom.

Anyway, I opened my video software and didn't see any compression tool. Then I thought about just opening Nero and seeing what happens if I go to burn this 3.5 gigabyte file onto a 700mb CD-r.

Lo and behold, after a couple of clicks and a warning about copyrighting, Nero went ahead and put the whole movie, in a smaller resolution of course, onto my CD-r. It took about an hour to encode the home movie down to CD-r size. Worked fine though.

Do you have the newest version of Nero Trigger?

ah it might well be that the item you want to burn has been downloaded and is around 7xxMb. If so, it will fit. Have no fear. Stuff downloaded has been cut to fit CDs so even if it is a few megs over it will still fit a 700Mb disk. Worked every single time for me.

I can't believe I went to the lengths years ago of hacking a 7xxMb file into two to burn it to two CDs Rolling Eyes

well thanks for the advice everyone. i picked up some 870mb discs from yongsan and tried to burn using my burning software (a programme called 'Noxio' by the way) and it still comes up with an error message saying that the files are too large to fit on. now i now they aren't too large (roughly 90min film, so about 750mb i think) so i think i need to get a new cd burning programme.
eamo - i had nero on a previous pc and it worked fine. i found a new version on download.com and it looks ok to me. i guess its the programme you use, do you recommend it? anyone have any other suggestions? or should i use a compression / shrink programme instead?
and if i do use a compression programme, is the quality greatly reduced?
thanks in advance of your help

Ah yes....

Roxio Easy Coaster Creator

Laughing

Dump that software...it only supports overburning in it's most recent incarnation.

Nero for simple burning does a fine job.

CD burning applications that support overburn:

This is totally off-topic, trigger, your avatar rules, you just reminded me a movie I need to bring with me when I make the move to SK, La Haine... I love that movie. Thanks.
