I am helping a friend out with her request. She is teaching elementary school and middle school students, and needs to write monthly reports.
Needs are... 5/6 separate sentences for grading students' progress. Going from good to not so good.
For example:
1) Student is doing well, has a good command of the English language and is able to speak English without difficulty. Grade ________
6) Student does not pay attention in class. Does not participate and has no willingness to learn English. Grade _________
Thanks all! |

Thanks Canuckistan! Especially for the quick reply! I'll pass them along. But what she needs still is written comments. 5/6. She wants to type them on the reports and check mark whichever one applies to the student instead of having to write a few hundred evaluations every month. |

Oral expression
Written expression
Listening comprehension
Each student's ability in the above 3 areas of Esl are so different that offhand I couldn't think of any general statements your friend could write--unfortunately I'm too deep into this stuff to keep it simple (a curse at times!) Also, it's hard to formulate statements without knowing the general level of your friend's students (Some elementary + middle schoolers are darned good!) and which of the below apply:
For example an evaluation of "Oral expression" can be further broken down into linguistic and grammatical aspects:
-nouns (vocabulary), verbs (tenses), determiners (a, an, the etc) pronouns (he, she, it) idiomatic expressions
-sentence construction, affirmative, passive, interrogative
-pronunciation, fluency, flow, rhthym, stress, intonation
Many of the above could be applied to evaluating "Written expression" as well.
Perhaps others here could simplify some of these things into more general statements.

x needs to listen to the teacher more
x needs to be better prepared and bring a pen, pencil, eraser and notebook
x needs to practice their spelling and writing
x needs to practice their pronunciation
x has shown great improvement over the last month
x has the ability to speak English they just need to apply themselves a bit more
x will never learn English and should be sent to work in a salt mine as soon as possible |

- v has been very focussed on his studies recently and this has shown in his work which has been excellent
-w Is doing well but could improve much more rapidly if he concentrated on his studies a little more
-when x chooses to do so s/he does very well but is easily distracted
-y has had a few problems applying this months material but the basics are there and with a little more practice he will be fine
- z has found this months material challenging but so long as s/he applies himself he should catch up well.
- z has worried me recently as he has shown a distinct lack of interest in my class. He really needs to show some more interest in the subject if he wishes to succeed. |
