I've occasionally posted a few pics here of Seoul and environs my family and I took when living in Korea, 30 some years ago. I've now posted about 120 of these at Webshots:

If you are interested in recent Korean history--esp. the time right before the economic boom beginning in the late 70s--please check 'em out. If you recognize any locations or see anything I've mislabelled, please leave a comment.

thanks,

scott

That is/was the National Museum. Its contents are being moved to Yongsan-gu right now and it will reopen this summer, I think?

Wow. I'm amazed that Korean kids in 2005 actually dress no differently from Korean kids in 1972, save they're not head down in a cell phone game ignoring their English teacher.

No doubt. 80% of those clothes, you can still buy in the streets of Namdaemun Market.

The only change that I really see is the quality of film being used back then versus now. And less noraebang and room salon signs, iyongsil barber shop poles, etc...

The kids are utterly fascinating. Great set of photos. National Geographic style intense reds, too.

I really liked this one:

I can't see the one you linked but I'm glad you enjoyed them. I like the kids too--they were a bunch of scrappy little entrepeneurs.

The film stock generally seems to be pretty poor, though some look great. Many of the ones taken on Yongsan Garrison seem very washed out and I had to manipulate them a bit in Photoshop to see any detail. I scanned most of the slides at 1800 dpi.

Thanks for the tip on Geongbuk. I remember being at these palaces but not always what they were called...

I'm posting 20-30 more today.

Good job. Those ones you called Yongsan hill I am really trying to place. They mostly look like Haebangcheon and Kyongnidan but something is missing. Where is Gate 19? By Yongsan train station? The photo of kimchipots, is that in Yongsan-gu in Haebangcheon next to one of the US gates? By the way, Taecheon Beach looks nothing like that anymore. That looks really beautiful, it's practically a parking lot now.

Jazzplayer,

Really enjoyed the pics. When I get a chance to dig through the P's attic, I will send you some from the other end of Korea in that time.

WT, cool. Thanks.

Pyongshin--those gate 19 pics were taken on Hangang Ro, a short way south from what we used to call the Samgakchi Rotary--a traffic circle. it is one of the gates into the garrison. I'd say it is halfway between samgakchi and the han bridge. it's also right by a large Korean post office building, which I imagine is still there.

Those kimchi pots were right outside the main gates into the garrison. The pic labelled "post gates" is that area from inside the post--gates 5 and 10, between Samgakchi and Itaewon.

I wish I remembered where the "yongsan hill" pics were from--I knew we walked there from yongsan, so I assume it wasn't too far...

That looks like the Daeyounggak Building after the big fire.
