A few days ago I was contacted by the Korea Culture Centre in Australia and asked to be a reporter. I had never heard of them before but after looking on their site (www.koreainside.info) it seems that they're a non-profit/government agency, largely funded by gyopos in Australia. They are also a branch of the Ministry of Culture & Tourism, which has locations in the US, Japan, and France as well. No Canada. Since they don't make any money either it's not a paid position...
BUT
you get a reporter pass which lets you into places only reporters can go, and that includes ûʹ, where the president is, and just about anywhere below that. So even though it's a volunteer position it's not something they will let just anybody do. That being said, for anyone who wants to seriously try it out it might be worth applying. They had already seen a number of my other articles in the ѱϺ so they asked me up front though.
The other good thing is that you can write as many articles as you like, and they get posted within about a day if they are suitable, and you can write in both English and Korean. If you feel like building up a resume this could be quite useful. In a few weeks or so the reporters will each get their own blogs as well with unlimited picture hosting and whatnot...

That's an article I put up yesterday (about space, big surprise) so that's what they look like after they get put up, and you get your picture below with links to whatever site you own, so it's not bad.
I was thinking some of the people here with really active blogs or press experience might find this interesting, so there it is... |

Good luck with it Mith..but methoughts are..
"A job you don't get money for, whoohoo!.
The whole "glamorous " journalism business exploits a lot of wannabees who fancy themselves as big name writers.
been there done that. All those magazines etc that constantly get good copy free from people trying to make a name for themselves...and about one % of the poor sods who spend ages building up a portfolio actually get a "properly" paid job on a publication...most papers have a regular turnover of unpaid staff on "work placement" or "probation" trying to get a job that never quite materialises. Also the profitable boom in expensive journalism courses...thrusting tons of grads out with high expectations every year, only to work as waiters and waitresses.
Its a bit like trying to be an actress, or a starving artist that wants to hit the big time one day. Everyone wants to be a journo. But its not that great...really,... I know... |

That's okay. I have an obsession with having as many Koreans as possible see what I'm writing, and I'm motivated more towards swaying public opinion than I am towards having an impressive resume, whatever that is. If I can convince enough people to establish a proper space agency here, I'll be in heaven. My resume is weird enough as it is.
To some people it looks like this:
Chosun Ilbo, KBS, EBS, this newspaper, that newspaper, wow!
and to others it looks like this:
Chosun Ilbo, KBS, EBS, this newspaper, that newspaper no university magazine here, magazine there...
I think of it as posting on Dave's plus a press pass and more Korean fans. |
