| Has anyone taken their hard drive back home with them? I would like to take mine when I leave. I called Air Canada and they told me that the airport will likely want to take the back off of it to make sure there are no explosive devices inside.....is this going to happen at every airport I stop at? Also....did you take it on your carry-on or put it in your checked luggage? Thanks for any info...I'm also considering just mailing it air mail...maybe that will save me a lot of hassle at the airport. |

| I've taken an external hard drive in and out of Korea. I just packed it in my check-in luggage, and didn't even think to tell anyone. No-one said anything to me about it. |

I took mine with me, in my checked baggage. I was told I wouldn't be allowed to take it in my carry-on, unless I would be able to prove that it worked. Which would mean plugging it into a desktop system at hte airport. Not very feasible.
Get yourself an anti-static bag and some good foam insulation - if you go to any computer shop, they should be able to give you some discarded packaging from another HD. Wrap that up in a sweater or something and pack it in the middle of your suitcase, and it should be fine. |

So if I do this...the HD should be fine.....nothing should be erased or anything? |

It will be fine. But if you want to be sure, pack it with a really strong magnet just in case. |

Did this last summer, when I went from Korea to North America, then to Europe, the Middle East, and back to Asia again with two hard drives in the suitcase.
Go to a store in Sunin Plaza in Yongsan that specializes in hard drives, and you'll see a stack of plastic hard drive case shells (a little like blister packs). Make the offer to buy one, but they'll probably just give one to you. Also get an anti-static bag like you get with video or sound cards, and wrap the HD in that before it goes in the plastic blister case. Then stick it in a small box along with some socks or underwear for padding, make sure it's in a protected place in your checked luggage, and you should be ok.
Modern hard drives are much more robust than they were 5 or 10 years ago. |
