Do you think the law requiring permission from your employer to do extra work should be changed, so that any one with an E2 visa can legally take on additional work without major difficulty? |
Yes. It will benefit the ESL industry in Korea and will help to keep teachers here. |

No. It will cause major teacher burnout and will attract money-hungry backpackers with no interest in teaching. |

Hi all.
No the law has not yet been changed, and to my knowledge, a change is not being considered at the moment. However, I have though about this issue for a long time and wondered how other people think about it. Following are a series of questions. Feel free to comment on as many or as few of them as you can.
Do you think the law should be changed to allow teachers with a valid visa to work 2nd/part-time jobs without their employer's permission as long as said 2nd jobs do not conflict with their schedules at their primary jobs? If yes, should teachers still have to report it to immigration, OR... ....no reporting as long as employer #2 withholds the appropriate taxes?
********If the law were to change, would you be open to taking a part time job in addition to your main job? or, are you too busy or too well paid to bother?******** Would a change influence how long your stayed/worked in Korea as an ESL teacher?
Do you think such a change would help/hurt Koreans? The ESL industry in Korea?
Do you have any reasons why you think such a change should never be allowed, or why sure a change is not needed?
Do you think we will ever see such a change in the Korean immigration laws? When? Never? In the next few years? 20 years from now?

It would be good for teachers if the law changed, but there is no chance it will.
A country's employment laws is one thing -among many things- that someone has to consider when they choose to work there. In this aspect Korea isn't a good place to work.
There are good things about teaching in Korea but its work laws aren't one of them. |

It seems to work well enough in Japan. Your visa belongs to you.

I voted no. If you are technically being sponsored by your employer, it is their business to know about a 2nd job.
If you can get a visa without sponsorship, do whatever you want. |

I voted yes, but only if you can be responsible about it. I mean, don't slack off on your first job, or miss clases, etc, as a result of your second job.
But I think it's possible to work one FT job and have a couple of hours on the side, maybe just 2 a day. |
