But the Perry Ellis thing is welcomed.[/quote]
Since I gave out one of my fashion secrets I thought I'd elaborate a bit more...The reason P.E. is good is because they really do have nice clothes and their white long sleeve dress shirts(if you can find them here? Many Korean men don't really know what professionalism is. During the summer they wear short sleeve shirts with ties. My experience is that short sleeves are not professional, even in the summer. You can always roll up the sleeve, that is still considered professional.) have a slight tweed/twade/fleece or whatever word I'm can't think of right now at the wrists/forearms which gives a more comfortable feel in that area. If you have ever worn cheap tight white dress shirts you may remember a tight feel in the wrist/forearm area and may know what I mean. My father told me this and P.E. is what I try to buy if I can. |

Im 188cm so its pretty hard to find shirts with long enough sleeves. I usually have to shop at department stores where they carry shirts that fit me. One of the brads I like is Comodo. They make very nice shirts and they fit me |

| Actually, I get both my suits and my shirts made in Itaewon so everything fits me pretty well. The only problem is I don't have an eye for style. Using some of the info on this board I can show the tailor a photo of the style I want and then he make it. |

| Did you really go to college or wasn't it very good. In my last year of college they taught me about professionalism, we had to dress-up one day in class and we discussed the matter. Didn't your father leave an impression on you, mine is a salesman and he finally taught me or I finally was ready to learn how to tie a tie. Go to Hyeondaiiiiiiiiiii department store look for "Perry Ellis," that is a good start. Good luck, and I'm glad to hear you have been and are attempting to look good! I only dress-up when I feel like it or on a special day. |
If a young man our age who is not a business exec is in a suit it is because he is:
- a Jehovah's Witness
- an unsuccessful salesman
- going to a job interview
- an insecure teacher trying to make a good impression because he's not sure his educating would - like me at the parents' meeting. |
Your age is what? 21? When I see most of the foreignes in Seoul I cant help thinking that they dress like complete slobs. Taking pride in your appearance is like an alien concept to the unshaven masses of foreigners wearing ill fitting, dirty jeans, sneakers and old sweatshirts. |
Taking 'pride' in my appearance (shaving and being the most neatly groomed and dressed, tattoo-free, earring-less foreign teacher at my hogwan) is merely compensation for not always taking pride in my teaching, at least certainly not with some classes. Thankfully most Koreans are stupid enough to fall for this sort of thing. It's really more antithetical to taking pride in yourself, when you think about it. |

The other extreme. There's a craterous difference between the above and a business suit. In that space there is plenty of appropriate dress for teachers.
My bottom end when teaching is cool, international tshirts under an open dress shirt and khakis. Great for hot days.
Top end is a linen suit I picked up in Daegu. Used for faculty dinners.
No tie, ever. Negatively affects my teaching. Deceptive too, as I am not a tie person.
Be true to yourself and project honestly. No place in the world can that be a bad thing. |

Koreans maybe. If I see an ESL teacher dressed like that I think 'what deficiencies is he trying to cover up'? Do you at least smoke in public so that people don't think you're a Morman missionary? |

Have you thought about checking out the Mormons or JWs? You'd probably be much better received. |

Im not worried about my reception. Cults like Mormons and JWs are also for the weak who need a crutch. |
