Some of you may remember that I said I would be coming to Korea later this year. This has changed as developments in my company here means that I will be seeing a big boost in my income, and as much as I want to go to Korea, I just cant leave my career at the moment without damaging my future propects. I wont be ready to go to Korea for 2 years.

The upshot is that I will have around US$50 000 in the bank.

I need to plan ahead for this. So here is my question for all you experienced Korean residents - what should I do in Korea?

I have Bachelor of the Arts degree and 2 years experience in lower management and 2 years in upper management. I would say I have intermediate Korean language ability and I dont have any problems conversing with Koreans. Even so, I suspect that it will be meaningless and I will end up as English Teacher. Is anyone out there working as something other than an english teacher?

Has anyone used the chunsee system for getting an apartment (where you pay a lump sum but get it back at the end of your stay)? What kind of standard could I expect for 25 million won?

Anyone that helps on this thread will get lots of free beers when I get to Korea (If you want, ill introduce you to chicks as well Twisted Evil )

For the whole $50000 you could get a small apartment in Gangnam, maybe about 8-pyung I think...might not look like much but then again you're paying exactly zero dollars for it so that's good. If you're leaning towards a place like Anyang or Sanbon you should be able to get a bigger place than that...
One thing you might want to look into is translating patents or legal documents. If you want a job as a translator that's where most of the material comes from. The down side is that it can be boring. It might even be more fun to just be a teacher for a year first and see what it's like.

You could spend those two years doing one of those online ozzie MAs. Which from chats with an Ozzie friend of mine would not only help with you getting a top notch uni job in Korea but could also lead to lucrative jobs in Hong Kong, Japan ect.
