Hi all

Would love some feedback on these two areas. I am considering positions in both spots. I have done a search on Dave's and also looked up the city websites in addition to the travel guide books. I realize that they are quieter areas which is fine with me. They both are close to water and very scenic which is what I am looking for. I am trying to get a feel for each area (pros/cons, ammenites/# of foreigners/proximity to larger areas etc...) I know that people rave about the beaches on Namhae but what about living there?

It would be extremely helpful to hear from those who have lived or visited either area.

All the best!

I have visited both and liked them both a lot. In fact, I wish I had spent my first year at one of those two places, followed by my second and third years here on Geoje. Instead, I take trips there once in a while, to enjoy the beauty. I'm going to Namhae next month because the trip offers the best views of cherry blossoms I've ever seen, and there's a particular mountain I plan on hiking. I also will go there at least once or twice in the summer to swim and hang out at Sangju beach.

But as for living there, in terms of proximity:

Namhae as a town is smaller than Yeosu but is closer to shopping, only two hours by frequent, cheap, comfortable bus from Jinhae (I'd even visit, with goodies you request Smile ).

I hear there's an express bus from Yeosu to Gwangju, although I haven't gone in that direction; I can only say Yeosu is much farther from the east coast, and so less practical for weekend jaunts to Tongyeong, Changwon, even Busan sometimes.

If you want to see the ocean every day then Yeosu may be better than Namhae because, although the latter is an island, the town itself is towards the middle, a bus ride from the coast.

But, if you work at a typical hagwon without a kindergarten, then you have the mornings to yourself, and the long, hot summers are conducive to morning scoots to the beach, if you are as inclined to as I am.

By the way, there are no jobs that I know of on Geoje at the moment, but there's one more hagwon director I'll be talking to next week, and I'll get back to you on that.

Thanks Van Islander

In terms of Namhae are there many other foreigners there? I just don't want to be the only English speaking person on the whole island. I know that there are two bridges off the island. Where exactly do they go to? Curious as to why you wished that you had lived in one of these areas before Geoje??

I appreciate you keeping an eye out for positions on Geoje for me.

All the best!!

Because it took me six months to want to even go to the nearby cities of Busan and Tongyeong; I was so busy adjusting to the work, socializing with coworkers and adult students, getting weekend tours around the local areas, being introduced to local habits and things to do, getting used to local shopping and living arrangements, basically the first six months were a whirlwind. The next six months I explored the island more closely and began to feel the impulse to travel farther afield.

As for there being other ESL teachers: of course there will be. More in Yeosu than Namhae, but some in every city, hagwons are too popular for there not to be. And you only need one or two friends at first, easy to make given the rural setting, especially if you are easy to get along with and accepting of others.

But if you want an expat culture, with group get togethers or hangouts, then Namhae or Yeosu aren't likely to be the place for you!

Yeosu is a very nice place to live.....a nice sized foreigner community if thats what you need...and close to the sea. Has McD's and Pizza Hut, and an E-Mart-uh....

I would like to live in Yeosu. Very Happy

I don't know much about Yeosu itself, but it is close to a lot of the southern islands, which could make for quite relaxing weekend trips.

Korea has 3 places I would descibe as paradise. Jeju, Koje and Namhae. Actually, Namhae is my favorite probably because its the most familar one to me. I used to live down south in Gyeongsangnam-do and I visited Namhae frequently. When its a nice summer day, nothing better than getting in our car, taking an hour drive down to Namhae, enjoying the road trip and some beaches. Namhae always struck me as very green and clean. And it has beautiful and dramatic scenery. Its super relaxing. Id live there if I could convince my wife to go to the country and leave Kangnam:) I dont think there are many foreigners there though so it would be pretty quiet and lonely if you had to live there by yourself.
