Has anyone checked this out?

The last question they answered was posted on December 20, 2004.

There have been 160 questions since then.

I guess the immigration office isn't the place to go with immigration/VISA questions. Rolling Eyes

I also think it's great how the map on how to find immigration is all in korean... after all, it's mainly koreans immigrating to korea right... Rolling Eyes

They do this on purpose. They try to make the whole immigration thing as hard and unpleasant as possible.

You have to remember, the last thing that the Korean government, and Koreans in general, want is a bunch of strange waegukin immigrating into their country.

Yeah, so much for the grand plan for the hub of asia or whatever it was called. Gotta get the small things right first.

Its more like dynamic Korea is the 'hub of confusion and everything illogical'. I like the way the immigration forms only have enough space for people with names that are Korean or Asian. The forms were constructed by Korean people for Korean people.

They still haven't clued onto the possibility that people from the west sometimes use a middle name. I often write down the side of the form, and no, I'm not Greek.

Actually went to the Immigration office last week to get my E2 renewed. The absence of immigration during that notorious lunch break has been rectified, as there as now one guy working instead of nil: thus covering the greater area of Seoul. Maybe next year there will be two....

A couple of year ago, the Q&A section was answer-able by just about anyone who looked at it. They changed that because I think too many people were badmouthing the immigration offices/officers... it's all fine and dandy if they would actually answer the questions themselves but they don't, thus making the Q&A board totally redundant.

My one liners.

How can they answer a question when they don't even know the answer.

Why have a rule in writing in English so it can be used when someone gets a different answer from a different person.

If you go by your middle name instead of your first, you're going to have problems getting a visa if you have transcripts etc. with your middle name in place of your first.

If your diploma is written in Latin, more problems.

If your passport reads John Q Public but your diploma reads John Public, fugheddaboudit.

...but at least you don't have to buy visa applications stamps downstairs in the cafeteria anymore.

Actually, meant the middle name thing from the perspective that:

there isn't enough room to write your name in the space allocated if you do happen to have a middle name. Like I said, it seems the forms were written by Koreans, for Koreans; not for westerners.

When Koreans write their names, its usually only covers a small space....

The forms should not be written for "westerners" they should be written for all foreigners. No doubt many chinese and other nationalities have short names too. There are other foreigners in korea besides english teachers

My son is a Korean and his name is just as long as mine. The dong office seems to have caught on to this, but immigration which I tend to think would have to deal with long names a bit more often has not.

The fact of the matter is that they just don't give a shit.
