The rest of Snap's "I got the power" after the first 3 seconds.

The slipping fanbelt on my neighbours car, nothing like a loud screeching sound at 6am every morning.

The crinkling of an empty bag (paper, plastic, whatever potato chip bags are made of), especially when I'm trying to listen to something else.

But I have super-sensitive ears. My mom says that even when I was little I couldn't stand that sound. She said there were times I would be napping and she would fold up or crinkle a shopping bag in a room across the house and I would jolt awake and start crying.

tall glasses being filled up with liquid- it really bugs me and I don't know why. It's OK if I can actually see the glass, but sometimes people use a sample of that sound in music and it's rancid.

I forgot about this one. Like listening to a radio ad for coke or a beer and listening to the amplified sound of the cracking open of the can, the sound of the pour, the frothing noise at the top, the loud gulping of the drinker, followed by the over-emphasized, 'Ahh!'

Mad

I know that you've been probably sitting on words like 'philistine' for awhile, waiting for moments in your life of when you can try to massage them into a conversational context to make you feel that you got something meaningful out of your university education, but the usage of the word to characterize me, due to an example that I chose to highlight some of my particular acoustical sensitivities, is a little off.

That's like calling someone a radical environmentalist, because they have a Chia Pet growing in their house.

I hate a lot of the stuff mentioned in this thread, but have learned to live with all of it, to a certain extent. The one thing I CANNOT stand (have to bite my tongue to keep from screaming or at least grimacing), is my father-in-laws grunts and groans, snoring and farting while he lies on the living room couch napping after dinner, while the rest of us are having some tea and fruit. Seriously, NO ONE farts louder than this guy. But it's actual the grunts and groans that drive me nuts more than anything. I mean, SHUT UP!!!!

It's a tossup between the scream-machine, the veggie-truck bellowing outside my door at 7am on Sunday, or the throat-clearing that precedes the impending disgusting deposit on the pavement, or worse, into an ashtray.

I have always hated certain sounds.

Here, I find everyone slurps their food. I can't deal with it. It's driving me up the wall. I was sitting in our common room, eating TV, and these two girls came in and were making the loudest slurping noises ever. I had to get out of there. Ditto in the small cafe here - slurrrrrpppp... I want to go over, get a knife and cut up the damn noodles into small pieces so the slurping will stop.

Loud chewing. Close your damn mouth!

People biting forks or other metal utensils.

Feet on carpet. I hate carpet, I hate feet, and I hate the sound that transpires when people rub their feet on carpets. Gross.

I also don't like fingernails rubbing on seatbelts. Have you ever heard that noise? It puts shivers up my spine.

My newest pet peeve... this was never an issue until I came here. I live in a hall full of these really cliquish girls who seem to have gotten together to buy the most obnoxious shoes ever. Slap, slap slap go the cheap plastic sandals. Clomp clomp clomp go the massive wedge heels. Clack clack clack go to the hideous heels. It would be so much easier if they would just pick up their stupid feet.

I sound like an anal retentive old woman, but gah!

"Wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world? Hhnnnggeeeaaahhhhh!!!" -Dumb and Dumber- Laughing

no, but for real: people chewing with their mouths open, smacking their food. it drives me crazy. oh, and whistling. i don't care how good they are or what tune they're whistling, it's annoying as hell. and as an addendum, the teeth-sucking adjosshis are starting to get on my nerves.

somehow, i've been able to cope with the slurping, even finding myself doing it while eating a hot bowl of ramen at home (by myself, of course).
