I have a bunch of DVD's that I have played before and now they wont play. I get a message that I need the correct "decoder". I downloaded tons of stuff and nothing has worked. I went into Tishiba support and downloaded their Video Controller for this specific laptop and it states that it will be loaded upon restart, but it never is. In my Device manager it shows a Generic VGA with yellolw question marks. I uninstalled those and rebooted and it reappears. I went to Microsoft's website and tried to download updated decoders but it would not let me????? I did the Authenticity test and it failed??? It will not let you update without passing their test. I bought the computer new a few years ago and it has the software on it. The original disks no longer work? Sounds like Murphy's Law in play?

My guess is that with Windows Media 9 things were configured so these problems would occur and you would have to get the validation for things to work again/

Any techie have any suggestion?

I spent a good 6 hours trying to resolve this yesterday

it's a little unclear what you mean, but try downloading VLC player, because that should be able to handle anything .

Try finding a program called DVD Genie or DVD Region Free. When you use DVD Genie, you can only change it 5 times, though. Others might be better.

It worked for me.

Do what I do when things start going funky.

Back everything up and reinstall Windows.

honestly that I think is part of the problem. I did this about a month ago and then things began to be problematic. I honesatly think it is this new thing that Microsoft is doing. Any upgrades etc require that you have them check to see if your software is authentic. I had some problems and tried to update and it told me that my software was in not authentix and so I could not update anything. It downloaded Windows media Player 9 without the needed decoders for playing DVD movies. I went to Toshiba website and it indicated that it no longer provided Decoders , that it has to be received through Microsoft.

I chexk my hardware devices and it showed a Generic Microsoft VGA Controller so I went to Toshiba and downlaoded the S3-Super Savage that is for this model of laptop. It downloaded everything and then told me to restart my computer. I did this and the computer siads it had found new hardware but fialed to install it? I have yellow questiopn marks on my Video Controller in Hardware devices.

I can use my CD and burn and watch stuff on my computer, but not with any of my DVD's.

I dowloaded every DVD player I could find and without success.

I didnt read through everything, so I might have missed something. Have you used up your five region changes? If so, that is your problem. You can flash your firmware. Do a search for your model DVD player and the term firmware. You should be able to find it rather easily. Now flash away and you will be region free. Be careful, you can blow up your DVD player. But as it is not really working anyway it should not be a big deal.

never was able to fix things so that Windows Media, BS, Real One or Intervideo would play it, but I came across the old Media Player Classis and have been able to play ALL my DVD's on it-including those from Thailand. This is freeware. It is probably not the same qulaity as the others but is ok.
