I just asked for a raise last week. I was putting in about 2 hours extra a day in prep, and felt that I was not being compensated accordingly. I sent my employers a diplomatic email. The next day, they sat me down, agreed with me and offered an extra 200,000 won a month.

I feel its best to speak up , because once the anomocity (sp?) builds up, its so hard to calm down.

Good Luck!

Well, the 6th month mark has just passed and I have only 6 months of my sentence left. I'm working at a school that expects a crazy amount of work from foreign teachers. This work includes marking 80 essays a week (no exaggeration), report card comments (4 or 5 sentences on 80 students), syllabus making, test making and marking, and other fun things that were not quite expected. Even though its a lot of work, I still try to maintain a positive attitude and continue to do it. However, Im slowly going crazy and am at the end of my rope. Im getting 2.0 million a month, not bad for a newbie, but I also work Saturdays. My out of school hours are spent working. Ive considered leaving but I really want the bonus at the end. Instead, Im thinking about asking for a raise.

Has anyone ever asked for a raise from a hogwan? If you have, how did it work out?

A raise halfway through a 6 month contract that states your monthly salary? Koreans like to say they are generous, but they rarely are that much generous. Ask for a raise in 5 months when it's time to negotiate a new contract. You might get one if they really like you.

In the mean time, you need to find ways to make your job easier. You might want to compose about 2 dozen sentences or so that you can use on the report cards. I'm sure you can find some examples online. Make a list of these to keep for quick reference as you write them. Write three from the list that you feel best describe the student and throw in a personalized one. There's just so much you can say in 4 sentences about a student, so why complicate things?

So I typed up a fantastic letter, had a meeting with my director, and was told they would let me know in a week...it's been 2 and a half weeks...but I have a feeling they might pay OT for essays and give me a bus pass.

They are recording all the essays that I mark, last week it was 90. So still waiting. Will tell you more once I find out more.
