My director got wind of my dissatisfaction and seems somewhat concerned. Her only real advice is that I can end my classes a few minutes early -- which is somewhat helpful, and may make a difference. Her concern is good to see anyway -- it will (hopefully) mean that she won't try adding anything else for awhile.

At the moment my throat is absolutely aching. I did a rough calculation of how many times I led a class in song today, and the number is (no joke) more than 40! Most of these songs come with actions and some with dances as well. At least I'm staying in shape, I guess Wink . But seriously, this is just day 2!!!! I've got 10 more months to go on this contract. Shocked

I can relate Casey's Moon..sorry to hear.

I signed on at what i thought was an awesome job, hours were great, no problems with pay, etc.

However as the year has gone on it has gotten progressively worse. At the start i finished at 8:15 and now i finish at 10:05, instead of teaching 40 minute kindie classes, they are 50, the aprtment is in the middle of frigging nowhere, i am suroounded by rice fields.

I know it is small stuff but they never told me about the changes, just expected me to adjust to them when they happened. Pay is still no problem.

It has gotten a lot worse lately in the last month or so(I only have 17 work days left, WOO HOO!!!) as severance and airfare is starting to pinch them.
There are the 2 of us leaving at the same time and they know I am coming back to the same area so have been not to bad to me but.....

My friend who is leaving for good has been coping death stares and being accused of being a robber(she is only getting what is entitled of her) which they said in Korean and were smirking until i pointed out I understand everything they say so don't be such a bitch about it. She is actually doing them a favor by staying a month longer.

At the start it was great, but I don't think i would recommend anyone to work there now.

It's Ok, I've got a great job(and yes this one for sure is great) lined up next so they can stick it up their asses.

I have seen lousey teachers get better schedules because "the kids don't like them, the parents don't like them..."

My advice is just to look at it as "a JOB". Do it, don't care so much, and tht is it.

Wish I could take my own advice tho...

Unfortunately, this is so bloody true. During my time here I, and other teachers I know, have found ourselves resenting the lazy/unpopular/incompetent/etc teachers who seem to get handsomely rewarded for their general uselessness and unpopularity with students. They always seem to get the easier classes and better deals.

Sorry to hear about the slow demise of a good job CM. Glad to hear you're not trapped there though.

Thanks again all!

Guangho, are you okay?

Did you figure out where the money went and why? Perhaps it was just an error??? Is this your first paycheque from your employers?

I'm just peachy. I'm going to see my paystub today and we'll talk. It doesn't matter in a way- if they stiff me I'll have an excellent reason to bolt. As whatthefunk knows I have my eye on this cushy corporate job related to shoveling coal, which is pretty close to what I'm doing now....

Yes, I can if I give them a month's notice or more. But up until a week ago, this has been the best job I've ever had in Korea -- better even than when I was at a national university for over a year. It was so stress free and yet rewarding. I'm not willing to give up on it yet -- but knowing that I do have a way out is helpful.

My job had (for 5 months) seemed really great until this past month...now we are getting loaded down with tons of extra stuff to do in our classes...essay writing, extra tests and quizzes...because it is the start of the new session, lots of parents switch their kids to different schools, so our school is trying to be all things to everyone, so that the parents will stick with us. It is maddening!

Our director has been snooping around the classes a lot lately, whereas before we were just let alone to teach the classes. Some of our teachers ended up with pure crap schedules (all beginners, or else all the high-pressure advanced classes) and none of the Korean staff seems to be interested in rectifying this.

I am supposedly a "good teacher" so that means I have to take on an extra class, because I am "needed" for all the advanced level classes, so it does seem like doing too good a job (or caring too much) can lead to more work...I feel so special....right!

I had planned on extending my contract, but now I think I'll be gone after one year. However....this first month is pretty hectic and stressful, so maybe things will settle down soon. A lot of our problem kids will be gone, and some classes will be eliminated as kids drop out. The school will (hopefully) stop trying to hang on to every last kid and just follow their own curriculum as they used to...our pay and overtime is NEVER a problem, and the staff is helpful overall, so I guess this stuff I complain of is pretty small....

Aw come on. You're actually one of the posters who rambles in an interesting manner...

Just wanted to say that I complained too soon. Things are straightening themselves out, and it looks like I might still be able to love my job after all.

For now, anyway.

this will sound bad but my personal experience is that Koreans dont appreciate the extra effort put in nor do they realise how difficult it is to go in day after day and give it your all.

good luck

This is exactly it. If you want to make a good impression, dress smart and get a haircut; it will be appreciated far more than extra lesson-plan prep. This isn't to say that a bit of extra work isn't worth it if it acheives results, but when the kids are far more excited by a new ball than a bunch of new pitures you spend an hour making it does make extra effort seem a bit pointless.

This is clearly true. The other thing that annoys me is their (and this probably goes for almost all Korean schools) lack of response to any FT initiative or desire to work things out in ways that better suit us. I prefer more advanced students and my co-worker likes kindie kids - will we be able to rework our schedules a bit so that we each have one more/less class of each? I doubt it.

Our rather un-cooperative supervisor just went on indefinite sick-leave, much to our relief. Another co-worker had a class he could no longer control, and I had a class I was getting bored of (and they of me, probably); the classes were at the same time, so we just traded. I'm still not sure that the boss knows. I seem to do better with insolent older girls and he with rambunctious younger boys. So what's the problem? The fact that we have a better idea of how to run things than them, no doubt.
