My wife and I are planning to get an F2 visa soon and I wanted to know if the visa cancels my current E2 or it sits on top so to speak.

I also wanted to ask all you F2 holders how many of you were required to show the money in your accounts while applying. Crazy rule for us ESL teachers IMO

The F2 visa becomes your main visa. You will have to pay again for your E2 visa. In the future if your F2 visa expires before your E2 visa your E2 visa also expires so you will have to do the paperwork again.

I think the showing of bank accounts is for those foreigners who have contract job. As long as you have a legal job, no problem.

Well I'm working at the moment although I'm through in 6 weeks after being there 3 years. I plan to find another job soon. So I guess I'd have to pay a little extra for the F2 but no problem I guess.

Getting an F2 is certainly worth it. All the paperwork and money to get your F2 isn't that bad. You don't have to show money. Getting a new E2 is usually not that much work either. The main monkey wrench is the conflicting expirary dates. Some Immigration offices try to persuade you to sign a new contract in order to streamline. There are pros and cons to this. My advice is to wait 7 -5 days before your current E2 runs out and then apply for your F2.

The best bonus I have had so far is that no Japan runs are necesessary anymore. Another bonus is the ability to add an extra E2 (two E2s in all) with little paperwork and just a small fee.

Has anyone ever told you that once you have a F-2 visa that you no longer need to apply for E-2?

I know you are going to tell me you have to blah blah blah.. but I have an F-2 since 3 years ago and I have not had to get a work visa at all.

I am not saying that you do not need a working permit, but you do not need to apply for an E visa to work. Once you have an F-2 visa, you just need to go back to the immigration and get *permission* to work. It's not really a visa but a work permit. It's cheaper and quicker to get and they don't require as many pieces of paper.

The front of my ARC says F2-1. The back says E2. Explain that.

So where does it say on your ARC "Permission to work" I only inqiure because that is exactly what an E2 Visa is. I hope you're not buying some director's story that you don't need an E2 with an F2. I also hope you don't think you can do privates legally with an F2. The F2 just enables your spouse to sponsor you and gives certain extra freedoms. It does not give you blanket coverage to work.

Perhaps you fell under the old rules, but the new rules apply to you too. I would check with someone more qualified than myself perhaps (efl-law or Korean Immigration) to see if you are actually legal. If you are, Kudos!

My E2 only cost 30,000 to renew and very little paperwork, my other E2 cost the same and had even less paperwork. This will all change if I decide not to re-sign. But even then it won't be much of a hassle.

she has no clue. The permission is the same as an E2 except that you dont have to do a run to Japan to get it. Its also easier to get out of. But thats all. F2 has NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR EMPLOYMENT. NOTHING>

Another good reason to get an F2 is, if things go sour at the workplace, you're not stuck in an impossible situation with no recourse.

I refuse to participate in your self-love/hate thread, but I'd like to point out here why some people might not like you. It's because you say things like, "she has no clue."

Its fine to give totally bad advice in a thread about cheese or clothes, but when it comes to visa issues, one should have a clue. She doesnt.

Actually I do have a clue. The front of my ARC says F2-1, the back gave the name of the hagwon I worked at, and the expiry date. No E2 written on it.

It was the same with my E-7. When I got my F-2, they said that I only needed to apply for permission and not the actual E-7 visa.

That is your E2. If you wanted to work at a second job, you would have two lines written on the back of it. Both would have the name and adress of the institute and expirary date.

Once again "Permission to work" = E2 Visa
Check the stamps on your passport.

The front of my ARC says F-2-1 . The back says: " " , which translates as "permission to engage in activities not covered by the status of sojourn". Why does your's say E2? I don't know. Maybe immigration has the option of granting the permission or adding an E-2 visa and different offices insist on doing it one way or the other. Or maybe , even though you don't actually have an E-2 visa, they wrote E-2 as a kind of shorthand explanation that you were given permission to do E-2 type work. Anyway, the form that I filled out at immigration was clearly marked "permission to...". What exactly did it say on the form that you filled out? You might want to take a look at the information at Immigrations website: http://www.moj.go.kr/immi/08_english/02_business/service_03_f.html
Tzechuk is correct.
