Don't be fooled into thinking that by working at a Public or Private institution in Korea, you won't have to face the "hagwon-type" hassles.

My co-workers and I are currently in a feud with the school over payment of money for flights home between contracts. They are not honoring it. We were told that Kyonngi required us to do a camp at the end of the year, and immediately following that, the school year started. We had no time to go home between contracts.

My co-worker and I went home the month prior to all of this, when we had a vacation.

They are now saying that they will not reimburse us for our tickets because we didn't leave between contracts. Our contracts clearly state they are responsible to pay for 75% of costs for a flight home between contracts if we renew. They told us to just take the flight before. Now they aren't paying.

Just a warning. These jobs aren't much safer than hagwon jobs, and expect to be screwed with just as much.

That's about as logical as saying only hagwons in Daegu are bad, but the Seoul ones are OK.

Koreans are Koreans everywhere.

Derreck just dig in your heels and let them know you will be paid in full by the end of the month. If they do not pay for your airfare they can consider this the 30 days notice for breach of contract.

Most likely they will fold, they have to know how full of crap they are being.

WTF!?!?!
It's NOT like the money is coming out of their own pocket!!
With all the waste in korea with taxpayers money...what's a flight ticket or two?!?
I personally have never ever, never ever, met one single korean who did not try and cheat someone out of money. Not a single one. Not saying it's bad or good...just the facts.
And I do business with koreans all the time.
You can have it in writing and still you'll be cheated or someone will at least try!

Funny, I have seen some Seoul complainers as well.

Are you in league with that recruiter, "Yesterday" who posts on here? Or are you the same guy? He recruits for some of the Seoul kiddie jobs, and tries to make it sound like they're all heaven.

I've got some land to sell you, too.....

Well, I guess I can side with you on that, since most of the jobs are in Kyonngi or outside of Seoul. It would make sense that there are a higher number of complainers because more jobs are open outside of Seoul.

I did a tour of duty at an elem. school. I found the staff to be less familiar about working with a foreigner than at a hagwon. I was often frustrated.

The elem. school is in many ways different than a hagwon (stable hours and classes), but as you kinda stated, they can be just as in the contract interpretation area....

Good luck. I would hate for this to ruin your experience. You seemed to have enjoyed the job otherwise...
