Well, I bought a new computer through my boss' brother. I asked for the top of the line in everything (within reason) and I'm sitting here in front of a monitor that is larger than my TV. I actually have to sit pretty far back to feel comfortable looking at it.

It came with two remotes. Or, perhaps one is for the computer? I don't know.

Anyway, I'd like to be able to use this monitor as a TV. I've been told it is supposed to do this. At the top of my monitor on the left side, it says, "SyncMaster Magic CX712MP Plus" and on the right side, it says "LCD TV Monitor". At the bottom, it says, "Samsung".

I have a DVD/VCR combo that I want hooked up to this thing as well as cable TV. Any ideas on how to go about doing this? Is it safe to just start plugging different things into different places to see if it works, or is that likely to ruin something?

I think your version has a coaxial cable jack -- hook your cable TV wire up to that. The remote control should have a button that says "TV/Computer" or something similar -- push that.

To put your DVD player into the mix -- run the cable TV cable into the DVD cable in jack. Run the short cable from the DVD output jack to the monitor cable jack. . .

If you have patch cords there will be a red, white and yellow tips. Run the cable into the DVD player, hook the red, white and yellow male connector on the patch cords to the red, white and yellow female connector on the DVD player and to the red, white and yellow femail connectors on the monitor.

It sounds complicated when it's written out. . . It isn't.

Okay...have done that and am now choosing random things from the menu in an effort to switch the computer to TV. Grrrr....got the operating system in English...never ENTERED MY MIND that the monitor would only speak Korean.

This is very frustrating. Most of the words my monitor is using are not in my dictionary.

Is there some secret code to what a TV/Computer button might be on one of these remotes? The remotes are both in Korean. I can't find a button that says TV/Computer in Korean....what else might it say?

I found that button on both remotes. In fact, one remote had that button twice. However, it didn't do a thing. I followed everything in the guide for setting it up. I'm sure that I have all the wires in the proper places. However, I can't seem to get the monitor to do anything other than show snow or act for the pc.

I guess I'll have to get the boss to call someone to come in and do it for me and I pay him/her. Grrrr....this should be easy!!

I have a CX710MP sitting right here. Should be fairly similiar. On the monitor or on the remote, there should be a button for 'Video' press that several time s and it will display the different video inputs mine has

Component
Video
S-Video
to get back to your PC press PC

the quick way to view TV is to press the PIP button which should bring up a little Picture in Picture screen over one corner of your PC screen.

NONE of this works unless you first plug your cable into the back of the monitor. Mine came with a small box that has an aerial socket sticking out of it. I had to screw (with a driver) this box to the back of the monitor before connecting the cable. Maybe you have to do the same. Maybe that box is in the packaging somewhere. Maybe it is AWOL

Let me know if you've tried all this.

Oh, and have you got batteries in your remotes

Yes, I have batteries in both remotes. Unfortunately, the cx710 looks NOTHING like what I have. So, it probably works differently, too.

Okay, well, I just found out that by having my OS changed to English, my monitor lost its ability to act as a TV. I don't understand this at all. The MONITOR doesn't have any English on it at all. It is still entirely Korean. So how does having the computer in English make it impossible to see TV on my monitor? Something is weird here. And if it doesn't work as a TV, then I've paid a LOT of money for a monitor that I really don't need. A much simpler (and cheaper) one would have sufficed. I'm really displeased by this.

EDIT: Here is a link that shows pictures of my monitor (scroll down). My Stupid Monitor I'd love it if anyone could explain to me why having an English OS destroys this monitor's ability to show TV.

Edit again: Huh. Just noticed that MY monitor has a "Plus" in script right after the cx712MP on the left top side and "LCD TV monitor" on the right top side. The one in the picture doesn't.

Well you have a very very nice monitor there and it will definitely have all the functionality you could ever need and more besides. It is taking some time to get to know all of this, like any complex piece of equipment. Hang in there!

You have the cable TV input there, I can see from the pics. Mine was on an optional box but yours is right there. My monitor settings are all in Korean too so I don't understand some.

Looks like you might be better off getting someone who knows some stuff to physically look at your system and get it set up for you. How about your boss or their brother?

According to my boss, his brother did try to make it work and he's the one who has concluded that having the computer OS changed to English, it killed the monitor's ability to function as a TV.

Someone pm'ed me a phone number of someone who might help and I gave that number to my boss to call for me since I can't even begin to explain where I live--even in English.
