I have some very advanced students.. and while I've been doing hardcore politics and newspaper articles.. i'd like to lighten it up a little.. and do something different..

Anyone know any great games or other things I can do with advanced adults?? games or contests would be fun just so they enjoy themselves as well..

Any ideas?

I think you should check out the idea cookbook on this site, or post in the Teacher forums, because I've gotten a lot of great ideas there.

One game that works well with all levels is Jeopardy. You can use it as a review or whatever. Some other good speaking games are 'Guess who?' and '20 Questions'.

I also like Penny Ur's books, Discussions That Work and 5 Minute Activities for ideas. I'm sure there are a lot of great books out there for your students, but I'll leave other teachers to post them since my kids are lower level than yours.

Jeorpardy rocks. I've got 2 different versions that exercise different grammar points or topics. I've also printed them up on color OHP and then use my hammiest game show host voice to play the game in teams. I usually have the class howling and asking for more.

I just bought a game off the internet that works quite well with a variety of levels. It's nothing fancy, just your basic question and answer game. You could probably make it yourself but for $30, why bother?

It's called Word Up. Check it out.

Scrabble is great! Not a lot of discussion (unless they play as teams), but great for vocab building.

Check out some bookstores in Seoul (Kyobo, Kim & Johnson) for some great discussion books.

Or have your CLASS come up with some things that they want to discuss. I had great succes with plastic surgery (an ajuma class!), pop songs (they bring the songs and lyrics), or in a mixed class, the difficulties faced by women (and men!) in Korea.

You don't have to play games every day of course, but once or twice a week really adds some energy to your class.

What is jeopardy...

Jeopardy is a trivia game that consists of a set of categories. In each categorie there are several questions, each question has a different dollar amount payoff. A contestant chooses a categorie and the dollar amount, (eg. "great authors for $100.00,")...then s/he is read an answer, ("this popular writer recently became the first to publish a novel using an online format"), to which s/he must provide the question, in question form, ("who is Stephen King?" - the 'who is' part is necessary). If the contestant is correct, the payoff is earned, if incorrecct, the payoff is deducted from his/her current score, though a score never goes below zero.

What a great idea for a game, I'm so sick of hangman!

Actually in the real game you can get a minus score. I have had students with minus 700. my maximum clue value is only 100 so those students really stunk.

There may be an explanation on how to play jeopardy in the idea cookbook. I could go into how I do it here, but it would take a while and I'm lazy. I think one of the most important things about the game is 'final jeopardy' though where students can win lots of points, or make a wager, because then it can really be anyone's game right up until the end.

I've also found lots of good teaching ideas at this site:
