My rooftop apartment on the fourth floor here on the island south of Busan just got rocked by a tremor big enough to knock my cup off the desk, plants down and the salt shaker off the shelf.
I went downstairs and outside immediately and talked with another foreigner who observed several buildings wobble at the same time.
Who else felt it in the southeast?
And more generally: Where and when else have earthquake tremors hit South Korea?
I recall a couple of weaker tremors over the last two years, but nothing like today.
I wonder if my building is even built strong enough to withstand a major quake. |

M ybed was shaking at about 11am this morning (I live in Seoul)... I was wondering what was going on...

| I actually just felt my building shake too, but I live in Gwnagju in the South-West. I didn't think anything of it, I said earthquake to myself but didn't believe it until I saw your thread. It was only for about 5 seconds but my couch was shaking pretty good. |

The east coast of Korea gets rocked by micro-tremors all the time. Usually too small to be felt.
Remember, just off the east coast of Korea is one of the world's major tectonic fault lines, where the Pacific plate is crashing into the Asian plate.
The whole east coast of Korea is rising out of the water as the west coast is sinking into it. In around a million years or so, Ulsan will be landlocked, while Mokpo will be under water. |

TOKYO - A powerful earthquake rattled southern Japanese on Sunday, swaying buildings and prompting warnings of tsunami. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The magnitude-7 temblor, which hit west of Kyushu Island at 10:53 a.m., was centered at an "extremely shallow" depth below the ocean floor, the Meteorological Agency said.
The agency warned of the possibility of 20-inch tsunami waves triggered by the seismic activity, and cautioned residents near the water to move to higher ground.
Police said there no reports of injuries.
Local officials in the southern state of Fukuoka reported water main breaks. Utility operators reported some blackouts.
The shaking, which lasted several seconds, was strong enough to topple desks and knock books off shelves, an official in Fukuoka told public broadcaster NHK TV.
NHK showed tall office buildings and street lamps in the center of Fukuoka, nearest the epicenter, shaking violently. In residential areas, cracks appeared in sidewalks and parts of retainer walls flaked off.
Kyushu Island is separated from South Korea (news - web sites) by a narrow strait of water, and the quake was felt in South Korea's port city of Busan, where it was registered at between magnitudes 4 and 6 and briefly shook buildings. No damage was immediately reported, a police spokesman in Busan said on condition of anonymity.
A magnitude-7 quake can cause widespread damage if it is centered in a populated area. |
