Agreed!
And the frictions within it.. definetely a classic!
It would be almost fun to bring back a page by page sum-up. |

This should be made into a sticky, one to pull out when all the apologists say their tired old "You just don't understand Korea" and "If you don't like it just go home".

1. Cops in America turn a blind eye to domestic abuse as much as possible.
2. The most people in America do is try to push two people apart or yell at the aggressor. It's not like Americans go dragging 200 lb guys out of taxis to get them away from a woman they are abusing. Except for in some movies like Hollywood Confidential of course.
3. Korean cops do (not always) try, but if you have a woman who probably was not in a situation to charge the man (that would be usual, he'd have some hold on her-- blood tie, marriage tie, blackmail, etc.) then what can the cop do, really, except tell the guy to settle down.
I hate it when men who have ---only--- visual experience of such things get all high and mighty like they know what this feels like for the woman, or even how hard it can be for the cops to do anything, no matter what sort of witnesses might exist. |

I broke up a beating and rape of a girl in the alley behind my apartment a couple of months ago. She was completely naked (clothes torn off by one of the two attackers), by the time I was able to get out of bed, dressed, and outside. I beat the crap out of one of the guys that wearily got off of her after I started yelling at him. The other guy, who I didn't know was even there, surprised me and popped me in the mouth. I told them that my wife had called the police and the guy who punched me actually grabbed my shirt so that he could keep me there to have justice done unto me for breaking up their fun. We went to the police station where my wife and I were treated like criminals (our phone number, work places, address, etc were shared openly amongst the cops in front of the two perps and the guy who punched me actually took a picture of me on his phone and uttered death threats in front of the police). They one guy threatened to press charges on me for his bleeding knuckle (which he got from punching me in the mouth), but, he and his friend were leventually et go, even though they both continued beating the girl once the police had arrived and her bare body was still showing upon their arrival. When my wife and I left to go home, the police didn't tell us that they would contact us to tell us the court date for putting these hooligans in jail but that he would contact us to notify us if charges were presses against me (they weren't).
The two guys were let go and nothing ever came of it. The cops blamed the girl saying that she was just a common *beep* who deserved every once of beating and sexual abuse which she received as a result of her wicked ways.
Next time, I will just call the police and stay in my house as it really isn't worth it getting involved in these situations. As a visitor of the Korean people, I am not considered a citizen and therefore have no rights as a person. Those guys could have told the police that *I* was raping and beating her and I would have had no way of defending myself, nor would the police care to help me (even if they knew it was a lie).
The police are corrupt, incompetent, and nasty upholders of status quo in maintaining the predominance of the "old boy's club" and who are really nothing more than "legalised" gangsters who are employed by the government. I trust the police for doing the right thing and upholding the law just as much as I would trust their mafia counterparts who run the nightclubs and prostitution slavery rings. |

I disagree... Maybe where you are from they do this, but most places I've been in North America, the cops DO arrest the abuser. It used to be that the Abusee had to agree to press charges, but most places have changed the law to take it out of the person being abused's hands and the cops MUST arrest the perpetrator regardless of the victim's will to press charges or not if it there is sufficient evidence to that effect (and sometimes if there isn't)
In the past and in most other places, it was/is up to the victim as to whether or not to press charges..not the police. If the person being abused wanted to press charges, the police have no choice but to arrest the perp if there is sufficient evidence. I've even seen WIVES get arrested after they were beaten for hitting their husband first. Domestic violence is a big issue these days.

Christ almighty!! Jazblanc....I was waiting for you to pop in some punchline to this story but no! It's not a joke...... I'm shocked once again and will continue to be shocked at how badly the police here treat the open beatings of women in the street. |
