|
|
I've sent my resume out to many, many schools and recruiters for the past several weeks. Today I received a response from one of my recipients that I think I should share with the ESL teaching community.
----------------------------------------------------
Thanks for applying but the principal at my school has
decided that they must have a woman (because of a
recent TV show here that said that all foreign men who
come to Korea are out to corrupt the Korean women~!!!)
Sorry about that. Best of luck finding a great job
here~!
From I removed her name, of course |

What's bizzare is that during the height of the SBS scandal a local gilrs middle school bought over a young (ie fresh out of college) guy to come teach teenage guys. I think some places might be thinking twice about hiring guys but in the end there just aren't enough female teachers over here so they end up making do. |

How can you "corrupt" these people? They make us look like innocent new born babies.
The korean male-dominated conspiracy wins again... How to eliminate your male rivals:
1) Drag away and force into your car, any Korean woman seen talking to a foreign guy.
2) Make life hell for any woman seen with a foreigner.
3) Ostracise and isolate any woman in a relationship with a foreign man.
4) Spread stories about all foreign men having AIDS.
5) Scour the internet for any random messageboard posting that paints foreign men in a bad light, and make it national news.
6) Eliminate all foreign males from being allowed to have any jobs in the country. |

You know it's not just korean guys who think that foreign guys are playboys. Is the director in question here a woman? |

Korean women are players of a calibre that would put Hugh Hefner to shame.
Even if all foreign guys here were honest nice fellows single-mindedly pursueing a serious monogamous relationship, they'd still find some way to slander us all with the same brush.
The Korean male dominated, macho society can't stand the idea of losing "their" women to anyone of a different race. A single, silly post on an internet message board gave them a godsend excuse to slander every male foreigner in the country.
Its pathetic. |

It is outrageous. The thing is that a lot of Women leave Korea after relatively short times as they can't stand all the how muchee? And byeontae taxi drivers trying to grope them and other pervy ajoshi mischief. I've met a lot more long time male teachers here and I think that is partly due to the fact that in general guys find it easier to adjust here than girls.
There will always be a limited pool of teachers and the pool will only grow smaller as more and more foreigners report horror stories about their experiences in Korea. Some foreign guys do behave inappropriately but then again some female teachers do also. The most bad behaviour I've seen from any particular group is definitely old Korean guys. Shocking displays of bad manners, drunkeness, violence, language, but they can get away with it! Why ? Because they are old male Koreans. The same behaviour from foreign males and it makes front page news.
The double standards make me sick. |

One day Korean men will wake up to the idea that to keep and attract women they have to change their behavior. Not simply intimidate, force, or manhandle women into their lives. Or try to buy them, in all the different ways that they do.Where is their charm?
Coupled with that, they need to stop killing all their unborn baby girls, or the problem will get even worse. |

I get the impression that in the past Koreans have favoured young males over young females, so perhaps this is just evening things out a bit.
Here's an idea: why not get a middle-aged person and check out their references thoroughly if they don't want someone immature? Too logical for Korea? |

Rapier I feel you are going a little too far with diatribe.Dont worry about things so much...life's too short and bitterness gets you nowhere...it just makes you the same as the people you are trying to attack in your post. |

I feel that rapier's post is high on generalizations, but at least we know they are generalizations, but the locals, wow, their lives are lived on, indeed fed on generalizations, so rapier working with generalization in a Korean context might not be far off the mark. |

No in general the preference has been for women, in particular blonde haired blue eyed ones from north america.
As for my troll I'll explain it further.
I don't think it's just korean men who think that foreign men are playboys. We're working in education with a bunch of women. They are the ones that largely do the hiring and firing if not directly then defeintly indirectly (I have a male principal but you bet your life that if I didn't get on well with the women further down the food chain I would be outta here).
Anyway I find it highly amusing that people are willing to use their own experience and obersvations to generalize against half the population of men here and then complain when they do the same to us come job hunting time |

You're going to find that, just because someone in the hagwon bussiness says something, doesn't mean it has any correlation to reality or what they're thinking. It just means they want something. In this case it means they found someone they like better and want to let you down easy.
By all means, don't take that personally. Hiring criteria around here are ridiculous. My friend got hired on here because his (male) boss thought he had a sexy phone voice. Don't worry about it, I'm sure you fit someone's arbitrary standards. |

I recently signed a new contract with my school. They brought up the English Spectrum scandal, but since they thought I did a good job, the students liked me and they trusted me, they wanted me to keep working there. (Yes, I'm a male.)
I wasn't sure if that was a compliment, somehow. Is "we don't think you're a child molestor" a compliment?
Anyway, although I didn't say anything, I was admittedly slightly annoyed that they seemed to buy into the fear perpetuated by this scandal. On the other hand, I like my coworkers and the pay keeps me happy, so I can't complain too much... |

Shhh... keen senses of observation are unwelcome in these conversations. |
