Give us five....heres mine
1. Brown Bunny - Vincent Gallo flick, excellent
2. Zatoichi - Japanese film about a blind samuri, Kitano Takeshi, very good and lots of blood
3. About Schmidt - newer Jack nicholson movie, just saw it and was very impressed
4. Easy Rider - a classic, probably my favorite movie ever
5. Adaptation - the only good Nicolas Cage flick |

Romper Stomper: one of Russell Crowe's early flicks about skinheads in Melbourne. Mega-violent, mega-cool save for the ending which is a little contrived.
The Third Man: creepy Orson Welles flick. The man's a genius. Harry Lime rules.
The Player: you have to choose at least one Altman flick. I like this one. A great satire of Hollywood. Plus, what movie can suck when it has Lyle Lovett in it? It's Lyle Lovett for chrissakes!
The Last Waltz: Scorcese's doc about The Band, and their last show. Great music, great interviews. Way cool. Robbie Robertson is a god.
Midnight Cowboy: not a really great movie from start to finish, but Joe Buck and Ratso Rizzo are one of the great film tandems of all time. And that Velvet Underground-esque party scene is so cheesy, it's worth the price of admission. |

I take umbrage with 'Adaptation' being called the only good Nic Cage film ('Leaving Las Vegas' is great; so is 'Red Rock West,' 'Wild At Heart,' 'Raising Arizona,' and 'Fast Times at Ridgemont High') and with 'Midnight Cowboy' being called "not really a great film from start to finish".
They's fightin' words.
Sparkles's recommendations, based on the flicks I've seen over the past few months:
1) Collateral: some people say the ending sucks. It doesn't suck. It's disappointing, but so is everything else in life (except sex; sex is never disappointing. Unless it's with someone you think is of the opposite sex but isn't -- and even then it might be OK)
2) House Of Flying Daggers: another movie that's slightly flawed but possibly more beautiful because of it's flaws. Sort of like a snaggle tooth on a really hot girl.
3) Million Dollar Baby: noticing a trend? This is a great movie marred by some bad decisions. Still, it's one of Eastwood's best, [sarcasm]just a tad better than 'Space Cowboys'[/sarcasm].
4) Minority Report: I love Senior Spielbergo for making such a well-directed, thought provoking film. I hate him for shooting such a poorly-paced, copout ending.
5) City of God: what a Brazillian gangster film directed by Martin Scorsesse would look like, only with more pathos.

Alright, I take my previous comment back. Raising Arizona was pretty good. So I guess theres two good Nic Cage movies...

I liked Nic Cage in Birdy. Underrated movie, IMO.
Matchstick Men, on the other hand, was a waste of two hours. |

What about the fake-vamprie one with Nic Cage where he suffers from dementia? Funny, but not ha-ha funny.
1) City of God. Gotta love the favello wars.
2) Seven. My all time favorite killer movie.
3) Fight Club. Thats right, two David Fincher movies. The Game would make it three, but dons't quite make my cut.
4) Kill Bill
5) The Matrix. Too popular to pick? I don't think so. |

No particular order...5 of my faves
1)Buffalo '66 --Vincent Gallo pretty much did this one alone (wrote, directed, composed the music). I haven't seen Brown Bunny yet, but I'll check it out just because of this.
2)Seven Samurai (or Rashomon)--both are top shelf Akiro Kurosawa movies...Kurosawa was Japan's Spielberg..only 1000 times better. Spielberg WISHES he could be Kurosawa. Honorable mention goes to RAN.
3)Cool Hand Luke--Paul Newman at his coooolest.
4)The Big Lebowski (or any other Coen Bros. movies..."Raising Arizona" "O' Brother" etc....except "Ladykillers" disappointed)
5)Any Tarantino film or film written by him...yes, I'm a fanboy.
Honorable mentions go to "Donnie Darko" "Pi" and "The Man WHo Shot Liberty Valance" (one of the only John Wayne films worth watching) |

I can only think of 4 right now, but these are some that I've had in my movie collection for years... but haven't watched because until 2 weeks ago, my movie collection had been hidden away in my storage unit in Utah. So, some recently re-discovered favorites:
joe vs. the volcano
"Do you want to marry her?"
"Yes."
"Do you want to marry him?"
"Yes."
"Fine. You're married."
So I Married an Axe Murderer
"Come Nadya, let us dance like children of the night!"
"Heed! Pants! Now!!"
Princess Bride
"But Wesley, what about the R.O.U.S.'s?"
"'Rodents of Unusual Size?' I don't believe they exist."
and a newbie:
Napoleon Dynamite
"Napoleon, don't be jealous that I've been chatting online with babes all day."
"...there's like a butt-load of gangs at this school. This one gang kept wanting me to join because I'm pretty good with a bo staff."
Of course, my all time favorite is (are?) The Lord of the Rings. But everyone's seen those. |

I'm assuming WTF is asking for the more under-the-radar movies that escaped Hollwood hype.
Once Upon a Time in America.........DeNiro is so complex in this movie. James Woods is great too. I love the boyhood scenes. And the teacup scene. Best original soundtrack in movie history IMO.
Quadrophenia...........Teen-gang Mod flick set in 60's London. Gritty and very recognizable for me.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest........Quite a big movie I know but I couldn't leave it out. All the actors do such a good job.
Barry Lyndon.........Underrated Kubrick movie with a career-best performance by Ryan O'Neal.
Life is Sweet.........Kitchen-sink drama by my favorite British director, Mike Leigh. So real it hurts. |

These are recommendations, not necessarily my favourite movies, as I knew most people wouldn't appreciate Anne of Green Gables and Little Women.
Waiting For Guffman - this is an absolutely hilarious Christopher Guest film. While we're doing quotes:
UFO Expert: I've been coming to this circle for about five years, and measuring it. The diameter and the circumference are constantly changing, but the radius stays the same. Which brings me to the number 5. There are five letters in the word Blaine. Now, if you mix up the letters in the word Blaine, mix 'em around, eventually, you'll come up with Nebali. Nebali. The name of a planet in a galaxy way, way, way... way far away. And another thing. Once you go into that circle, the weather never changes. It is always 67 degrees with a 40% chance of rain.
Far and Away - my favourite Ron Howard film, and it's all about the love story.
Deskset - 1957 Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. A good one for a rainy saturday with ice cream, a blanket, and your cat.
Deat Poet Society - Koreans really love this movie for some reason... I see it everywhere.
Reality Bites - Whenever I've been unemployed, I love to go get this movie. It's very early 90's- Ben Stiller, Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke. Helps me feel like not such a loser when I'm out of a job. |

1) The best Korean movie that I have scene: Oasis by Lee Chang Dong.
The main character played an amazing role - he never thought about the consequences of his actions. Amazing.
2) Shadow of the Vampire: a remake of the story behind Nosferate. Starring John Malkovich and William Defoe. A must see.
3) Deadman: with Johnny Depp.
4) Casablanca: can't go past it for the amazing lighting.
5) Silence of the Lambs |

My usual big up for Das Boot (especially if you can get the full miniseries rather than just the film), and if you haven't seen it Kentucky Fried Movie is worth it for the historical context (and Catholic High School Girls In Trouble).
Also, I didn't think I'd say this - but Team America: World Police is fantastic.
I echo what was said about Zatoichi and Kurosawa (though I prefer Throne of Blood personally). |
