Probably one of the least multicultural societies in the Western Hemisphere to be honest. Argentina with its spanish/italian would be another one at 85% white (and 15% mestizo, indegenous, etc.).
Most in the Western Hemisphere (taken from www.lonelyplanet.com):
Brazil: 55% European descent, 38% mulatto, 6% African descent, 1% other. (In reality, these figures are skewed by whiteness being equated with social stature in Brazil.) This stat is off though as the Japanese population alone is 1-2 million-plus people. - TB
Mexico: Approximately 60% mestizo (mixed European and Amerindian descent) and 30% Amerindian (indígena - including Nahua, Maya, Zapotecs, Mixtecs, Totonacs, and Tarascos or Purépecha), 10% other
Peru: 54% Indian, 32% Mestizo (mixed European and Indian descent), 12% Spanish descent, 2% other
Cuba: 60% Spanish descent, 22% mixed-race, 11% African descent, 1% Chinese
Colombia: 58% mestizo (of European-Indian descent), 20% European descent, 14% mulatto (African-European descent), 4% African descent, 3% African-Indian descent, 1% indigenous |

Sweet. Thanks, Tiger. I'll put up America's numbers for comparison.
white 77.1%,
black 12.9%,
Asian 4.2%,
Other 5.8%

So, hmmm, what can we say? Percentage-wise, Canada is slightly more white, a lot less black, and a lot more Asian. I guess this pretty much conforms with my impression of the situation. |
"White" (and lesser numbers of "Black") here includes those identifying themselves as Hispanic. |
Yeah, that's totally true I forgot that. It's always interesting how various organizations choose to divvy up race. Because, if one spends any length of time thinking about it, 'race' is a pretty artificial mental construction, a simplified version of a reality that is much more ambiguous and confusing.
I mean, if you put Wesley Snipes and Brad Pitt next to each other, race seems pretty, well, black and white. But what about Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas? Are they different races? How about Brad Pitt and Jeff Goldblum? Are Koreans and Japanese different races?
And just what the hell should we do with Tiger Woods??
Pretty soon you see that however you divide it up, it's going to be more bases on your opinions than any scientific reasoning.
Often, people on these forums will levy the charge of racism against Koreans. But I don't know if this is the right word for the prejudices Koreans can hold. Because Koreans are capable of being plenty prejudiced towards Chinese people. But some redneck in Cousinf*ck County, Alabama, wouldn't likely make any racial distinction between the Chinese people and Koreans. Americans tend to see black, white, brown, and yellow. It seems Koreans tend to just see Us and Not Us. |
