old school (hilarious will ferrell comedy!) |
This movie was great at the beginning, but I think it kind of fell apart at the end. Still funny as hell though... |
yeah, but ferrell was at his best in the flick, i'd say.
what did you think of venus, the goddess of love? |

Never seen it...dont really want to. I watched a horrible movie on tv the other night that was conveniently in 4 languages...Chinese, Korea, Japanese and English. I would love to tell you what it was about, but as far as I could tell, it had no plot whatsoever... |

Here are a few favorites of mine that haven't been mentioned yet.
True Romance - Definitely Tarantino's best movie.
Kingpin - Dumb comedy, but a masterpiece of it.
Memories of Murder/ ߾ - My favorite Korean movie, a true story story about the hunt for a serial killer featuring Korean detectives at their most corrupt and incompetent. Gripping.
Changing Lanes - A very moving drama exploring the more subtle nature privilege and racism in the 21st century. Great performances by Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Affleck.
Heaven and Earth - Oliver Stone epic about the Vietnam War told from the perspective of a Vietnamese woman who eventually emigrates to the US. Beautifully and cleverly filmed, and a fascinating story. |

2)Seven Samurai (or Rashomon)--both are top shelf Akiro Kurosawa movies...Kurosawa was Japan's Spielberg..only 1000 times better. Spielberg WISHES he could be Kurosawa. Honorable mention goes to RAN.

Kurosawa is a very cultured pick ... Rashomon was so good it was adopted into the English lexicon.
Personally, if you like the Japanese masters, I'd go with Yasujiro Ozu. Bit more sedate, observant of day-to-day things that make people tick. "Tokyo Story" and "Floating Weeds" are must-sees. |

A few long-time favourites:
Smoke (low-budget movie written by Paul Auster and starring Harvey Keitel)
Grosse Pointe Blank
Over The Edge (featuring a very young Matt Dillon)
Assault on Precint 13 (the original John Carpenter version)
Requiem For A Dream
Also, check out http://movie-reviews.colossus.net/top100/toc.html for an on-line top 100 from a guy named James Berardinelli. IMHO he's one of the best movie reviewers around today and he rarely recommends a movie that I haven't enjoyed. |

4. Coffee & Cigarettes: Jim Jarmusch' latest (and earliest) offering. Loved it. Snapshots. Some don't work, but the ones that do are pisspants funny. Favourite scenes are Tom Waits meets Iggy Pop and the Delirium scene featured in the av, Gza, Rza and the man they call 'Billmurray'. This thread about it was a huge success.
