| I'm not sure exactly what can be done to help them......if there was anything I could do I would definately do what I could to help...not just because they are canadian....since I have been here I tend to identify myself with "foreigners"....this could just as easily be an american, australian, new zealander....and I would still feel the same way....if there was anything I could do to help.....you could count me in. |

I skimmed the thread on EFL law this morning, and they've set up a fund to collect money for bail/ to give to the guy whose jaw they broke.
Personally, I don't really see them or the Korean as victims, so I see no reason to get involved |

they are alone on this one!
they knew what would happen if they fight. so its up to them and their familys to pick up the pieces.. asking fellow teachers to pay for there mistakes is just ridiculous! and alittle pathetic sorry.. |

I tend to agree. Gotta be careful about what kind of situations/environments you put yourself in. I imagine most of us have been out drinking at 4 AM at some point, but we should also know that there's a lot of drunk aggressive folks out at that hour, too.
Without knowing the whole situation - i.e. who was wronged, if anyone - I'd be reluctant to put any of my money into it. |

| When I said I would help....I actually meant in a supportive way...not financially. I guess I just look at that like it could happen to anyone here....unless these two hid in a dark alley waiting for this one korean man all by himself to innocently walk by so they could beat him helf to death.....which sounds unlikely to me....then yes I would support them. Perhaps it depends on how you were raised....my father was old school right from the streets...I was told growing up that if you were sure someone was not going to let you walk away....don't even wait for them to throw the first punch....if there's no way out then swing your way out....I know that korean laws are different than the laws back home...but still....everyone makes mistakes and finds themselves in situations that they would rather not be in. At this point...nobody knows for sure what actually did happen. |

| Ive been in a similar situation... except I didnt get put in a cell... either way its not pretty... but they dont deserve any help. When in Rome... and it doesnt matter who started it, or whose fault it was. Its a learning experience, I learnt the hard way... why should it be any different for them?? cause they called mummy and daddy?? They're old enough to look after themselves. |

In the efl-law thread, there's two different accounts written by (alleged) eyewinesses.
Account #1: The upstanding Canadian boys were outside taking a leak in The Bar's alley urinal when they got jumped by several Koreans. Friends from both groups tried to break up the fight. The Koreans were let go, the Boyz were held. No immediate mention of injury to anyone.
Account #2: One of the Boyz suckerpunched one of the Koreans for (supposedly) no reason whatsoever. The Boyz left, one of them taunting the Koreans to finish it outside. The Koreans left 5-10 minutes later to find the Boyz outside waiting. One broken jaw later, the cops nab them and book them. Plenty of character witnesses saying how these guys
would never do such a thing.
Two pretty extreme (and totally different) stories from people who supposedly saw everything. Either someone's lying, or both are letting alcohol dull their perceptions, so that the truth lies somewhere in between. I opt for the latter.

I remember this one event that happened a year or two ago. The story went that this girl in Busan had been attacked by her Hagwon owner leaving her seriously injured. The esl community seemed to rally behind her and even set up a fund to help her.
A few weeks later it turned out to be pure BS.
So I'm not sure how many here want to help out a fellow waygook under such suspicious circumstances. |
