What do you think about school owners checking your apartment to see how clean you are keeping it? I say it's dumb and none of their business how my apartment looks. My personal space and business is MY business. Don't you think?

That's never happened to me. Tell them off, in no uncertain terms.

Tell them you want to be present when they enter and don't let them nap on your bed. Don't worry, maybe all they were doing is taking a nap on your bed.

Tell them no way Jose! If they tell you that tell them you want to be able to check up on their apartments too. See how that flies!

Sitting around in the nude when they open the door will be sure to stop it from happening again.

I am sure that once you moved in...you did change the locks and gave a spare key to no one. I'm sure you did that of course.
Tell the school owner that you want to check out his pad as well!
But seriously...I can't believe someone would ask that! And I can't believe anyone would let them!
Tell them the answer is NO. And ask them what part of NO don't they understand.

It is not YOUR apartment. The school owns or rents it. They are responsible for it legally. The school should be able to check it when you are home after prearranging a time. Many teachers cause a lot of damage and they should be checked up on every few months to see if the apartment is ok. A teacher could just trash an apartment and run away, leaving the school a large expense.

I'm one of those people whose worst house-keeping offense might be leaving dishes in the drainer (never in the sink), books on the table, or the vacuum cleaner out in plain sight. But at my first job, I had an academic director who was adament about inspecting teacher's apartments, supposedly to make sure they weren't in danger of being infested with roaches. Of course, he didn't mention that he was inspecting apartments until he walked in on one of my co-workers as she was getting out of the shower one day. (He knocked. She assumed somebody was peddling something and ignored him.)

A number of us pitched a fit at that juncture, but the owner insisted the dude was simply looking out for us. ... Then came the priceless day when my apartment mate got sick, and the head honcho had to drive her home, as the academic director was nowhere to be found. Poor girl could hardly stand up, so Mr. Top Dog escorted her up to the apartment ... where they were greeted by the sight of the absent academic director surronded by borrowed undergarments and engaging in "self-gratifying behavior."

Thankfully, that day marked the end of both the academic director's tenure and the apartment inspections.

Dawn, that's classic Very Happy I hope he was suitably gratified...

I have no problem (well, not much of one) with house inspections, as long as notice is given, and I am able to be home at the same time. It is, after all, not my home, and I am used to house inspections on rental properties from living in Australia. Of course, they were about 6 months apart.

I understand where both sides are coming from on this one. I lived at a townhouse style for two years with three roommates and the boss stopped by maybe twice. Wasn't any major inspection, just made it sound like she was in the area and we had her into the living room.
Two other teachers that had their own place (brothers actually) did a midnight runner after not having ideal schedules. That would have been bad but even worse when the boss had me go over to check their apartment. They had trashed it, and I mean literally trashed it. Broke the dishes, knifed the mattresses and even pisssed on the mattresses, I kid you not. They also had people over the night before for "free long distance". The boss was NOT impressed and swore she'd never hire that nationality again. I was never so disgusted as there was NO call for that. Sure their schedules weren't the best, but being newbies that was how it was, heck I spent 3 years there and I sure as hell didn't pull that crap. So while this case is extreme, yeah I tend to side with the boss on seeing the place every once in a while, especially since they're responsible for it.

That makes no sense whatsoever. If someone wanted to trash their place in revenge for bad treatment then they'd obviously do it immediatley before leaving so there's almost no chance that having visits from anal bosses could prevent them from doing that.
