My "private" high school has this "reform through labour" thingie, that is almost like something out of the North.
For punishment the students have to work on the grounds around the school. Planting trees and flowers, pruning and cleaning, and building little gazebos.
The result is one of the most beautiful school grounds I have ever seen. |
My first reaction to this one was, 'hey, that's neat!," but then I realized that it is teaching that good clean hard-work is a punishment. It's kind of like assigning extra math homework to punish someone.... Doing math and gardening should have their own rewards, and not be used as punishments...

I think it's a great idea! Even better, get them cleaning up the garbage around the school neighbourhood!
You don't have to treat the kids like they're on a chain-gang, you can even try to make it a little fun for them or get them to take pride in what they accomplish through plaques, etc. The fact that they would have to do it on their own time is punishment enough! |

Yesterday, one of the male teachers here had a boy in a headlock dragging him through the halls. The grip was pretty tight, and the kid looked like he might pass out. When they noticed I was present, the teacher dragged him in another classroom...likely for further punishment.
I can understand why the kids are so happy and rowdy in my classes....because they know I would never do something like that to them. |
