Does anyone understand why Roh is saying that by that prefecture government declaring Takeshima Day, Japan is rejecting Korea's independence?
I don't get the logic. Anyone able to explain? |
Simple, he needs to improve is public approval ratings if he wants to win the next elections. What better way to do so than to appear tough on Japan? |

| It would be kind of like a group in Russia claiming the Hanko Peninsula and saying that March 6 is Hanko Peninsula Freedom Day. |

Nope. The president of South Korea can only serve one five year term. He can't be re-elected. |

That's going to change very shortly. The Korean government is in the process of amending the constitution to change to a four year Presidential term, with a two term limit. Same as the USA. Going to happen here this year or next. All that's left is some political horsetrading and getting President Noh to promise he won't re-run. |

I understand the logic of waving the bloody shirt to boost ratings in the polls. That wasn't my question.
I can't figure out how Japan claiming those pebbles rejects Korea's independence. |

He [Roh] can't win anything. Korean presidents are only one-term presidents. If Roh, specifically, is looking to be tough on Japan, that won't necessarily spill over to his party for whomever they choose to run for president next.

So today I was called into the principals office for my weekly meeting with him.
Anyway he gives me this document from the gyeonggi do education office on dokdo. It basically outlined the korean position on it. The thing had a very biased line not much debate, just japan is evil blah blah. So I was mroe than surprised to see that in coming out of a public education office. Then basically he told me that dokdo is korea's and the sea between japan and korea is the east sea. He was upset to be told that we got taught in schools that it was the sea of japan.
I was somewhat taken a back by this. First up that such a document came out of a public education office and secondly that I had to get a lecture on it. My classes rarely talk about current events as I stay well clear of them due to my students low level of english.
Anyone else have any Dokdo related weirdness? |
Would anyone like to read the Dokdo document? I just got it today, and was asked to sign off on it. It's several pages long, complete with photos and arguments. I wonder who's "special project" it was to create it, and what they got for doing it. |

Ok, I'll scan it tomorrow. It's in English, and like 10 pages long. There were some crappy photos in it, too.
It's written fairly well, and did include some web site links. Maybe one of the links will have the whole thing, and I won't have to scan.
I don't feel bad posting it, because it says in the document that they basically want everyone to read and understand the Korean position on it. They'd probably be thrilled so many foreigners read it. |

| You got one that was ten pages long? DAmn- the one they threw at me today was just over 40 pages and written in slightly broken English. Since they told me I have to give it back, I'm almost tempted to take a red pen to it first. |

Well, mine was from Gyeonggi... maybe the Public Schools have a different version circulating?
I really got the feeling it was some Gyopo's "special project" to do it. although there are at least a few very "korean" mistakes in grammar, if I remember correctly.
The thing that bugged me was the section about how Japan was responsible for changing the "C" in Korea to a "K" so it wouldn't come before Japans name in whatever alphabet they're referring to. It's like they had to get off on that other tangent, too.... as if that somehow lends credibility to the whole Dokdo thing.
It left me wondering if I could lose my job based on spelling "Korea" instead of "Corea" if they ever wanted a reason to can me some day, saying, "Hey, he got the memo and signed off on it!" |

So I am trying to get my students to talk about mail-order brides (remember, I am teaching at an American university language institute) and say that in some countries this is a hot topic (alluding to issues in Korea).
Without a second's loss...a Korean guy jumps up from his slumber, gets really agitated and in a VERY loud voice says, 'It's ours!'
I'm lost. Non-Korean students are lost.
Other Korean students chime in on the same wave of emotion...then I realise....I say, 'no no no..not that issue...' and proceed to rephrase my original question.
The Japanese students in my class just rolled their eyes and smirked.
I wanted to laugh so hard...I think my lip bled.

The Gyonngi document says this in addition. The end points I find odd and almost funny. So are they saying, in point 15b, that it's OK if we find that their position is wrong? haaahhah... somehow I doubt that would be allowed.
14. The basic standpoint of the Korean Government
"Dokdo is apparently part of Korea's territory from standpoints of history and international law. Korea's dominion over Dokdo is firmed by 'effective domination', one of core elements to establish territorial sovereignty in the international arena, and historical facts.
The basic standpoint of the Korean government is that Dokdo is part of effectively occupied territory by Korea and cannot be the subject of diplomatic negotiation.
The best way to consolidate dominion over Dokdo is to continue to calmly and effectively dominate Dokdo. If such efficient governance continues in a long term period, argument against dominion over Dokdo will disappear. Unless there is a change of state by means of war according to international law, whether to govern effectively or not is the core point of territorial sovereignty. Effective governance is mainly converned with 'continuous and peaceful display of sovereignty'.
For this reason, the Korean government emphasizes that Dokdo should not be recognized as one of troubled parts to the world. For Dokdo, evidently part of our territory, to make struggles with Japan is not consequently helpful to consolidate Korean's dominion over Dokdo.
The Korean government carries out such policies and conveys our strong position over Dokdo's dominion to Japan whenever the Japanese government raises question on that matter.
15. What can we do?
a. We are able to forward an email to provide correct information related to Dokdo issues.
b. We can talk about the issues relevant to Dokdo, and we can find what is wrong and right.
c. We can hold an event to memorize the importance of Dokdo.
d. We are capable of finding the Website located in Japan, and let them know the truth.
e. We can do some activities to express our love to Dokdo.
f. We are able to sign our names as a way to love Dokdo." |
